This really is a distinguished group of genealogy blogs and includes quite a variety including news blogs, instructional blogs, research blogs, podcasts, humorous blogs, serious blogs, opinionated blogs, factual blogs, and everything in-between.

I’ve followed most of these blogs for quite some time, but I have to admit that there were a couple I hadn’t visited before I saw this list.

The genealogy blogosphere is constantly changing, with new blogs appearing all the time. When I started this blog three years ago, I found only a few genealogy blogs to include in my Blogroll. Now, I’m overwhelmed with the number of genealogy blogs available. It’s safe to say that there exist genealogy blogs to fit nearly anyone’s taste and the list is still growing.

Moreover, genealogy blogs don’t exist in isolation. The social networking aspect of blogs through comments, communities, and interactions among bloggers enriches the medium and provides a method by which bloggers and readers can improve their genealogy skills.

Thanks, ProGenealogists for recognizing these genealogy blogs, including mine. And now, if you don’t mind, I think I’ll bask in my 15 minutes of fame.

New York, List 14, lines 28-31; citing National Archives and Records Administration microfilm M237B, roll 282.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the passenger list for Georg Lather and family. That list provides the following information about the family:

  • Georg Lather, age 35, sex male, occupation Mech[?];
  • Louise Lather, age 40, sex female;
  • Johannes Lather, age 6, sex male;
  • Louise Gade, age 14, sex female.

All had departed Germany for the United States.

The identity of the 14-year-old girl named Louise Gade is unknown. Since her surname is the same as Louise Lather’s maiden name, one can suppose that she may be a niece or some other relation to Louise Lather.

28. Johannes Lather, son of Johann Georg Lather

28.
In the Year of the Lord, eighteen-hundred and sixty, on the morning of the seventeenth of August at about nine o’clock, based on a credible report, the second child and second son was born to Johann Georg Lather the third, citizen and day laborer here in Kirtorf, of his wife Louise née Gade and, on the twenty-sixth of this same month, the child was baptized and given the name Johannes.

The Godfather was Johannes Lather, the surviving, legitimate, unmarried son of the deceased Heinrich Adamus Lather, a citizen and cow herder here, the father’s brother, who has signed the present record next to the father and me, the deacon and minister who performed the baptism.

[signed] Johannes Lather
[signed] Johann Georg Lather III
[signed] Ludwig Ebald
Deacon and Minister

Johannes Lather was the second great-grandfather of my cousin Chris. Chris had previously found the birth record of one of Johannes’ children in a Lutheran Church in Albany, New York, and that record listed Kirtorf, Hessen-Darmstadt as the place where Johannes had lived prior to immigrating to the United States.

The present record is the first that we have found for the Lather family prior to their emigration.

This record was written in German Gothic handwriting and was nearly impossible for me to read. Fortunately, another patron of my local Family History Center is fluent in German and experienced in reading Gothic handwriting. Many thanks to Heike for transcribing and translating this document for me when I found it on microfilm today at the Family History Center!

It happened in the city of Przasnysz on the fifteenth / twenty-seventh day of April in the year one-thousand eight-hundred seventy-three, at eleven o’clock in the morning -  There appeared Teodor Niedziałkowski, a farmer in Golany, thirty years of age, in the presence of Adam Wilkowski age forty and Wincenty Zbikowski age forty-five, owners of a part [of the village], residing in Golany, and he showed us a child of the male sex born in Golany on the seventh / nineteenth day of April of this year at three o’clock in the afternoon, of his lawful wife Wiktoria née Długołęcka, twenty-six years of age. To this child at Holy Baptism performed on this day was given the name Władysław, and the Godparents were Ignacy Murawski and Sabina his wife. This document was read aloud to the declarants and to the witnesses who are unable to write and was signed by us. –
Pastor of the Przasnysz Parish, Rev[erend] [Budry?]

This couple gave birth to a second son named Władysław in 1882, suggesting that the child Władysław born in 1873 died before 1882.
