15. Głowko and [Mosaki] Rukle. This happened in the church-owned village of Krasne on the twenty-fourth day of November in the year one-thousand eight-hundred thirty at the hour of two in the afternoon. We make it known in the presence of witnesses Tomasz Ossowski, owner of a part in Głowko and residing there, forty-three years of age, and Piotr Grabowski, owner of a part and residing in Kułki, forty-nine years of age, brother-in-law of Błażej Chodkowski  who is named below, on this day a religious marriage was contracted between Błażej Chodkowski, a young man residing with his family in Rukle, having been born in [Mosaki] Rukle of the married couple Jan Chodkowski and Józefa née Grzybowska and residing there, nineteen years of age, and the young woman Józefa, daughter of the married couple Wojciech Gożdziewski and Anna née Kierzkowska, residing in Głowko, eighteen years of age, residing in Głowko with her family and with her parents. This wedding was preceded by three readings of the banns on the seventh, fourteenth, and twenty-first days of November in the same year in the parish of Krasne, as well as the oral consent of the parents of the newlyweds who were present for the marriage record. No impediments to the marriage arose. The newlyweds stated that they had made a premarital contact on the eighteenth day of November of the present year before Antoni Niski, [Regent and Chancellor?].

Błażej Chodkowski was my 1st cousin, 5X removed.

Of particular interest is the fact that Błażej Chodkowski and Józefa Gożdziewska had made a prenuptual agreement on 18 November 1830. Most Polish marriage records report that “The newlyweds stated that they had made no prenuptual agreement between them”.

Janice Brown's Genealogical Superpower

Janice Brown may be lost in the puckerbrush and Janice’s CowHampshire blog may have disappeared from the blogosphere but, back in October 2006, she was probably the first of the Genea-Bloggers to create a Genealogical Superhero avatar – “History Woman”.

History Woman

For reasons beyond my ability to comprehend them, Janice’s entire “History Woman” comic is still available at what I thought was the defunct cowhampshire.blogharbor.com domain. UPDATE 12 Jan 2010: Well, the link worked yesterday, but is now giving an error message! Too bad!

I don’t know how to get in touch with Janice, so I hope she doesn’t mind that I reproduced a panel of her comic here. I’ve taken the liberty of reproducing only one panel of her comic with careful consideration of the Fair Use Doctrine. I have reproduced only a small portion of her work for the non-profit educational purpose of a tribute to the creator. My reproduction here should have no effect on Janice’s ability to market her work, should she choose to do so. Heaven knows that if I’m out of line, Janice will inform me of that fact!

Janice also created a “Genea-Man” comic for Randy Seaver. I’d love to see that one again. Oh, and by the way, I’m still working on my lecture, suggested by Janice, entitled Steve’s Guide to Translating Illegible Handwriting.

My Genealogical Superpower

Dean Richardson’s January 1st post “What’s Your Genealogical Superpower?” was picked up by Randy Seaver for “Saturday Night Genealogy Fun” and then Sheri Fenley (aka The Extraordinary Flying Condor) upped the ante and posted about “Super Heroes and the Powers That May Be” and included a cool avatar.  Donna Pointkouski (aka The Extraordinary Splintery Stick) has also reported on her Genealogical Superpower in “Donna’s Picks” and included an avatar. Likewise, Tina Sansone (aka Gtownma Census Superhero) wrote about her Genealogical Superpower at “Census Superpower”, Midge Frazel (aka Super Midge) wrote a post at “Super Midge” and Cindy Bergeron Scherwinski wrote “What’s Your Superpower?” (although she seems to have misplaced her cape).

In need of a bit of a diversion I, too, created a Superhero avatar at The Hero Factory.

The Astonishing Aimed Arrow

My Genealogical Superpower? I suppose it’s my dogged determination and ability to jump into new sources and repositories in order to find information about my ancestors. The records are written in Russian? OK, I can learn enough Russian to read the records. The repository is in Lithuania? OK, I can travel to Lithuania. The clerk at the cemetery office just told someone that they really can’t help people with their genealogy research? OK, perhaps I can charm the clerk into making me a copy of the cemetery file for my relative, anyway.

I still have a lot of brick walls to knock down. Even though I have good evidence for the parishes where the records of my grandfather and great grandfather should be, their records aren’t there. So, now, I’m left with the brute force method of genealogy: shoot arrows in every direction and see what I hit. To that end, I’m searching all the microfilmed Polish parish records for a wide radius around Pomaski, Poland and, with luck, I might find where my ancestors really were when they claimed to be in Pomaski.

What’s your Genealogical Superpower?
