The Marriage of Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska

After showing the Birth and Baptismal Records of the children of Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska, it’s about time to show the marriage record for the couple . The Marriage Record for Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska is the third marriage recorded on the page shown below.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Marriage Record for Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska. The record states that:

  • The marriage of Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlenszczonka was recorded on page 96 of the marriage records for 1793 for house number 11 in Nienadowa
  • The couple was married on 11 Nov 1793 in Dubiecko by Walenty [Kruzoski ?], assistant pastor
  • Wojciech was a 21-year-old unmarried Catholic and Marianna was a 21-year-old unmarried Catholic
  • The witnesses were Jan Szumanski and Wojciech Trupiło, [farmers without land]
  • There is a notation that reads Extrad 10/10 879 No. 96

The priest was rather creative with Marianna’s surname, spelling it Jedlenszczonska rather than Jedlińska . The bride and groom were most likely unable to read and write, so there was no way for them to verify the spelling.

Note that one of the witnesses to the marriage was Wojciech Trupiło, who later would be the Godfather (sponsor) for several of the couple’s children.

Since both Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska were 21 years old at the time of marriage, they were both born about 1771-1772. Their births predate the time when records of Births and Baptisms were maintained in Dubiecko, so this marriage record may be the best extant source for their birth year .

I am not certain what the notation Extrad 10/10 879 No. 96 means here . I previously thought that the notation meant that the individual moved, but the date indicated here, 10 Oct 1879, was probably after the death of both Wojciech and Marianna. Perhaps this notation shows when the marriage information was extracted in order to produce a marriage certificate. This is just a guess.

On a final note, there is a large “X” to the left of this record, and the names of the bride and groom are both underlined with a different pen than that used on the rest of the page. I am unsure of the meaning of these markings, but one possibility is that the marks were made after the death of one of the spouses, when the other remarried.

The Birth and Baptism of Michał Dańko – 1816

The seventh child of Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska was named Michał .  He is listed as the first birth recorded on page 692 of the Birth and Baptismal Register for Nienadowa in 1816.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptismal Record for Michał Dańko – 1816. The record states:

  • MichałÂ Dańko was born on 22 Sep 1816, in house number 140 in Nienadowa, a boy legitimately born to a Catholic family
  • He was baptized on 23 Sep 1816 by A.R. Ignacy Miłucki in the church in Dubiecko
  • His parents were Wojciech Dańko, a farmer, and Marianna Jedlinska, daughter of Wojciech Jedlinski, [born a servant of the court ?]
  • His Godparents (Sponsors) were Wawrzeniec Markowski and Marianna Markowska, occupations illegible

With this record, the dates of both the birth and baptism were recorded.

Note that Michał was born in house number 140. All the previous children born to Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska were born in house number 161.

A notation under the mother’s name appears to state that Marianna Jedlińska was born to Wojciech Jedliński, born a servant to the court. If this translation is correct, it appears that Marianna’s father was well-connected in the community.

The occupations of the Godparents (sponsors) are largely illegible, since it was cut off in this image. However, the words “servant” and “wife” appear to be in this description.

The Birth and Baptism of Stanisław Dańko

The sixth child of Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska was born in 1810 and was named Stanisław. His record is the fifth from the top of the image below.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptismal Record for Stanisław Dańko. The record, translated from the Latin, states:

  • Stanisław Dańko was born in house number 161 in Nienadowa, a boy legitimately born to a Catholic family
  • He was baptized on 07 May 1810 in the church in Dubiecko
  • His parents were Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlinska
  • His Godparents (Sponsors) were Szymon Jedlinski, a landless farmer, and Marjanna Markoska, wife of a farmer
  • He was baptized by Leopold Rudzki

Stanisław’s Birth and Baptismal Record actually includes the header of the page. Many records I have do not include the header, and so I used the header of this record to identify the contents of the record.

In the first column of Stanisław’s record is written the Latin word “Idem”, meaning “the same”, and so I had to look at the previous entries to determine that the month was May and the name of the priest was Leopold Rudzki.

The Birth and Baptism of Rozalia Dańko

The fourth child of Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska was born in 1804. She was named Rozalia and her Baptismal Record is the last one at the bottom of the image below.

Birth and Baptismal Record of Rozalia Danko 1804

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptismal Record of Rozalia Dańko . The record states:

  • Rozalia Dańko was born in house number 161 in Nienadowa, a girl legitimately born to a Catholic family
  • She was baptized on 10 Aug 1804 in the church in Dubiecko
  • Her parents were Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska
  • Her Godparents (Sponsors) were Wojciech Trupiło, a landless farmer, and Marianna Markoska, wife of a farmer
  • She was baptized by Leopold Kuczki

Several of the five children of Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska whose Birth and Baptismal Records I’ve shown so far have the same Godparents (sponsors). The Godfather of three of the children was Wojciech Trupiło and the Godmother of four of the children was Marianna Markoska.

Why were these two people asked to be the Godparents of the Dańko children over and over again? Perhaps Wojciech Trupiło and Marianna Markoska were close neighbors, prominent citizens in the community, or family members.

Throughout the Galician records, several different Latin words were used for farmers. The ones I seen most often are agricola, meaning a farmer who owned land, rusticus, meaning a landless farmer, and hortulanus, meaning a gardener who owned a small amount of land.

The Birth and Baptism of Wiktoria Dańko

The third child and first daughter of Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska was named Wiktoria. She was born in 1800 and is listed as the third baptism from the top of the image below.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptismal Record for Wiktoria Dańko. The record states:

  • Wiktoria Dańko was born in house number 161 in Nienadowa
  • She was baptized on [06 December 1800 ?] in the church in Dubiecko
  • Her parents were Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska
  • Her Godparents (Sponsors) were Wojciech Trupiło, a landless farmer, and Marianna Markoska, [well-considered of the parishioners of Nienadowa ?]
  • She was baptized by [Gabriel Golecki ?]

The left side of this document has deteriorated to the point where it is difficult to read . Click on the image above and enlarge it as much as you can so you can see the rough texture of the paper on which this document is written.

Personally, I think that images such as this, taken with a digital camera, are so much superior to the microfilm images commonly available for historical records. Not only are the photographic images usually clearer than microfilm images, but you can see the texture and color of the paper in the photographic image.

The records for the parish in Dubiecko, Poland have not been microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, so I had to hire a genealogist in Poland to obtain these images for me.

The genealogist indicated that the date of baptism for Wiktoria was 06 Nov 1800, but the name of the month looks more like December to me.

The name of the priest who baptized Wiktoria is difficult to read, but I think it is Gabriel Golecki. I also couldn’t translate the occupation of Marianna Markoska, one of the sponsors. I believe the occupation may say in Latin “Coctrix de Adela Nin”, which I have translated as “well-considered of the parishioners of Nienadowa”, meaning that Marianna may have been a member of the nobility, but I’m not at all certain about this translation.

The Birth, Baptism, and Death of Pawel Dańko

My great-great grandfather, Pawel Dańko, was born in 1799 . There is, however, a Birth and Baptismal Record for another Pawel Dańko, born of the same parents in 1796, three years before my great-great grandfather’s birth. The Birth and Baptismal Record for Pawel Dańko born in 1796 is the third record on the image below.

Birth and Baptismal Record for Pawel Danko 1796

The Birth and Baptism of Pawel Dańko – 1796

SOURCE: Roman Catholic Parish of the Immaculate Heart of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, Dubiecko, Poland. Liber Natorum et Baptisatorum (Book of Births and Baptisms). 1796. Pawel Dańko. Text in Latin, translated by Stephen J. Danko.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptism of Pawel Dańko – 1796 . The record states:

  • Pawel Dańko was born in house number 161 in Nienadowa
  • He was baptized on 01 Jul 1796 in the church in Dubiecko
  • His parents were Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedlińska
  • His Godparents (Sponsors) were Wojciech Trupiło and Zofia Waydzina, farmers (peasants)
  • He was baptized by Tomasz Lazarowiz, Assistant Pastor

The sponsors signed with a mark “X”. This is distinguished from the mark “+” that indicates the death of the person named in the baptismal record, as on the Birth and Baptismal Record for Wiktoria Bębenek. The “+” mark is the sign of the cross and is sometimes circled to distinguish it from the “X” used to sign the records.

The fact that the next male child born to Wojciech and Marianna was also named Pawel is a good indication that their son Pawel born in 1796 died before the next male child was born. After the death of a young child, Poles often used the same name for a child born later.

The Birth and Baptism of Pawel Dańko

My great-great grandfather, Pawel Dańko, was born in 1799 .  Pawel was the older brother of Maciej Dańko, whose Birth and Baptismal Record I showed yesterday .  Pawel’s baptism is recorded as the last record on this page from the Dubiecko parish records .  His baptism was the first baptism recorded for Nienadowa that year.

Birth and Baptismal Record for Pawel Danko 1799

The Birth and Baptismal Record for Pawel Dańko

SOURCE: Roman Catholic Parish of the Immaculate Heart of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, Dubiecko, Poland. Liber Natorum et Baptisatorum (Book of Births and Baptisms). 1799. Text in Latin, translated by Stephen J. Danko.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptismal Record for Pawel Dańko .  The record, translated from the Latin, states:

  • Pawel Dańko was born in house number 161 in Nienadowa
  • He was baptized on 04 Jan 1799 in the church in Dubiecko
  • His parents were Wojciech Dańko and Marianna Jedleńska
  • His Godparents (Sponsors) were Szymon Jedleński and Marianna Makowska
  • He was baptized by Tomasz Lazarowiz, Assistant Pastor
  • There is an enigmatic note “1. Ertu”

Note that the house number for Pawel is the same as that for Maciej: 161 .  House numbers are a good way to verify that the individuals named in the records are part of the same family group.

The church records in Galicia were almost never indexed .  House numbers provide a quick way to find records for individuals in the same family group because the researcher can quickly scan the House Number column instead of reading each name.

Notice, too, that the mother’s maiden name in this record is spelled Jedleńska, but is spelled Jedlińska in Maciej’s record .  Other spelling differences between the records include Marianna / Marjanna and Makowska / Markoska.

The parents and Godparents named in these records probably could not read or write and probably didn’t know how to spell their own names .  The duty of correctly spelling the names was up to the priest, and different priests often spelled the names differently.

The Birth and Baptism of Maciej Dańko

Maciej Dańko, son of Wojciech Dańko and Marjanna Jedlińska and brother of my great great grandfather, Pawel Dańko, was born in 1808 .  The record of his baptism is the fourth on the page from the Book of Births and Baptisms of the parish in Dubiecko.

Birth and Baptismal Record for Maciej Danko

Birth and Baptismal Record for Maciej Dańko

SOURCE: Roman Catholic Parish of the Immaculate Heart of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, Dubiecko, Poland. Liber Natorum et Baptisatorum (Book of Birth and Baptism). 1808. Text in Latin, translated by Stephen J. Danko.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptismal Record for Maciej Dańko .  The record states that:

  • Maciej Dańko was born in house number 161 in Nienadowa
  • He was baptized on 01 Jan 1808 in the church in Dubiecko
  • His parents were Wojciech Dańko and Marjanna Jedlińska
  • His Godparents (Sponsors) were Pawel Jedliński and Marjanna Markoska
  • A notation was made that on 14 Jun 1882 he was in house number 59

The register notes that he was baptized on the same date as the entry above, meaning 01 Jan 1808 .  No clear notation was made of the date of his birth, which may actually have been a day or two earlier, but could also be the same day as the baptism.

The baptismal records for this time period provide minimal information .  No notation of the names of the grandparents, the name of the priest who performed the baptism, or the name of the midwife was made.

The far right side of the record was cut off in this image .  The missing portion describes the occupations of the Godparents.

In dealing with names in the records from the former Galicia (Austria Poland), I always translate the names from Latin to Polish for my reports. In this record, the translations of the names are:

Mathias (Latin) = Maciej (Polish) = Matthew (English)
Adalbertus (Latin) = Wojciech (Polish) = Adalbert, Albert, George (English)
Marjanna (Latin) = Marjanna (Polish) = Marianna (English)
Paulus (Latin) = Pawel (Polish) = Paul (English)

As in many of the Dańko records from Dubiecko, there is a notation that Maciej was living in a different house at some later date .  Curiously, not all baptismal records include such a notation .  In particular, on this page, only the record of Maciej Dańko includes this notation.

The Birth and Baptism of Wiktoria Bębenek

I received a message from Kasia Tropiło who provided me with quite a bit of information on her ancestors, including Katarzyna Dańko .  As it turns out, Kasia and I appear to be fourth cousins, twice removed!  While the final documents to prove the connection are still missing, the document I have that supports the connection is the Birth and Baptismal Record of Wiktoria Bębenek .  Wiktoria’s record is at the bottom of the image of the parish record book shown below.

Birth and Baptismal Record for Wiktoria Bebenek

The Birth and Baptismal Record for Wiktoria Bębenek

SOURCE: Roman Catholic Parish of the Immaculate Heart of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, Dubiecko, Poland. Liber Natorum et Baptisatorum (Book of Birth and Baptism). 1870. Entry Number 90. Text in Latin, translated by Stephen J. Danko.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptismal Record for Wiktoria Bębenek .  The record shows that:

  • Wiktoria Bębenek was the 90th child born in 1838 in Nienadowa, Galicia (Austria Poland), and was born on 19 Dec 1870 in house number 44
  • She was baptized in the church in Dubiecko on 20 Dec 1870
  • She was a legitimately born, Catholic girl
  • Her father was Antoni Bębenek, a gardener, son of Franciszek Bębenek and [?]
  • Her mother was Zofia Dańko, daughter of Maciej Dańko and Franciszka [?]
  • Her Godparents were Wawrzyniec Chruścicki [?] and Zofia, the wife of [?]
  • Wiktoria died on 16 Dec 1871

The bottom part of this record was not included in the digital image I have .  In fact, this record was not even the subject of my interest at first .  The record immediately above the record for Wiktoria Bębenek was the Birth and Baptismal Record for my step-great grandmother, Zofia Głowacz .  I only noticed Wiktoria’s record by chance, long after the image was obtained.

Because the bottom of the record was not included, I don’t know the name of Antoni Bębenek’s mother or the maiden surname of Zofia Dańko’s mother (although I can tell that Zofia’s mother’s maiden name begins with the letter “J”) .  Other information is also missing.

This record shows that Wiktoria’s maternal grandfather was Maciej Dańko, and it is Maciej Dańko who is the critical link between Kasia’s family tree and my family tree .  I believe Maciej Danko is Kasia’s gggg grandfather and the brother of my gg grandfather, Pawel Dańko.

To confirm this link, I’ll have to obtain this complete record and Maciej’s marriage record .  These two records will either complete the link or disprove the link.

In addition to this evidence, the time and place are correct for the Maciej Dańko in my ancestry and in Kasia’s, and several surnames repeat in both our records.

The records from the Dubiecko parish have not been microfilmed, and so Kasia and I will have to obtain the records directly from the church in Dubiecko.

One final observation: notice the cross (+) and the date on the record .  This notation indicates Wiktoria Bębenek’s death .  She died just a year after she was born.
