Whereupon the present birth document was read aloud by us and signed below, inasmuch as the witnesses appearing do not know how to write. by the name of Szczepan of the nobles Andrzej and Kunegunda née Milewski Niedziałkowski, a legally married couple. The Godparents were the Nobles Andrzej and Wiktoria Niedzialkowski, [one word?] Pałuki.

As with most other Polish records from this time period, this record does not specifically state all the details of the baptism. The reader must refer to the top of the page for the year (1791).

As with other records from this time period, the title and name of the priest is difficult to decipher. Also, the phrase after the names of the Godparents is difficult to understand, and is apparently a descriptor of the Godparents.

The Godparents are described as “Generosi” meaning “Noble”, but I don’t know what the difference is between those listed as “Generosi” and “Nobili”.

My Genealogical Holiday Tradition

Every year since 2002 I’ve traveled to Salt Lake City to conduct research at the Family History Library during the Thanksgiving weekend to enjoy the relative quiet of the Family History Library while most people are out Christmas shopping. This trip has become my own genealogical holiday tradition.

On Sunday evening, I visited Temple Square to view the holiday lights. I hope you enjoy these photographic memories of this year’s trip to Salt Lake City.

The Birth and Baptism of Jan Niedziałkowski – 1799

On about 05 May 1799, Jan Niedziałkowski, son of Andrzej Niedziałkowski and Kunegunda Milewska, was born in Klonowo, ziemia ciechanowska, województwo mazowieckie, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was baptized in the parish church in Pałuki, ziemia ciechanowska, województwo mazowieckie, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on 05 May 1799.

Click on the image above to enlarge it. Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Birth and Baptismal Record of Jan Niedziałkowski – 1799. Translated from the Latin the record reads:

Klonowo

On the 5th of May, I Gabriel Bietkowski, chancellor of Livonia and prior of Pałuki, baptized an infant with the name Jan, son of the noble Andrzej Niedziałkowski and Kunegunda née Milewski. The Godparents were the noble Kazimierz Pajewski and the noble Józefa Pajewska, both from the village of Klonowo.

As with most other Polish records from this time period, this record does not specifically state all the details of the baptism. The reader must refer to the top of the page for the year (1799).

One of the most difficult parts of these records for me to understand is the title of the priest. These titles are often abbreviated and the details of the titles are not found in most Latin dictionaries. In this record, the title is Canus Live Prapositus Pałue, where the words Canus, Live and Pałue include special characters that apparently show the words are contracted. As far as I can tell, the full title is something like “Canonus Livoniae Praepositus Pałuki”, meaning (roughly) “Chancellor of Livonia and Prior of Pałuki”.
