The Two Kingdoms (A Cautionary Tale)

Once upon a time, in a land far away to the west, there lived a Geneablogger who lived in a small but peaceful kingdom on the shore of a beautiful bay. One day, while walking through a green, green meadow on the outskirts of the kingdom, a little bird named Auntialias flew up to the geneablogger’s ear and twittered, “Geneablogger! Geneablogger! Did you know that the rulers of the kingdom of Facebook think your blog is abusive? When I tried to follow a link on Facebook to your site, I received this message!”

With that, Auntialias dropped a file into the Geneablogger’s hands and then gingerly alit on his shoulder, waiting to see how he would react to the message. The Geneablogger, enormously perplexed, gingerly opened the letter, and this is what he saw:

“Egad!” exclaimed the Geneablogger in astonishment. “How can this be? I must posthaste log onto my Facebook account and try to discover what is going on!”

With lightning speed, the Geneablogger opened a browser window, typed in the URL for Facebook, and entered his login credentials. But, alas! Facebook returned a message that his Email/Password combination was incorrect! The Geneablogger, sweat now dripping from his brow, clicked on the link to reset his password but, to his dismay, his efforts were rewarded with an even more disheartening message:

The little bird, still on the Geneablogger’s shoulder, gasped in horror! “Oh my! Oh my! Whatever will you do? Your honor has been challenged! You must do all you can to restore your reputation, Geneablogger!” And with that, the little bird flew away, still chattering to herself, “Oh my! Oh my!”

The Geneablogger, clearly shaken by this sudden turn of events, immediately followed the instructions in the message to contact info@facebook.com and ask why his domain was reported as abusive. All he could do then was wait for the rulers of Facebook to help him. But no help came.

The Geneablogger wrote to the rulers of Facebook again and again, but the rulers of Facebook never responded.

Six long weeks passed. Still unable to log into his Facebook account, the Geneablogger grew more and more concerned. He was still receiving friend requests, invitations to events, and even personal email messages through Facebook, but he was unable to log into his account to respond to any of them.

Finally, he decided to call the rulers of Facebook by telephone. But, woe and more woe, the Facebook phone number lead him only to a voice message that said that Facebook did not provide customer support by telephone.

“But lo!” exclaimed the Geneablogger. “The Facebook castle is just down the road from here! I can ride my trusty steed to speak to the Facebook rulers in person.” And so he did.

Upon arriving at the Facebook castle, the Geneablogger was stopped by three young guards at the castle gate. None of the three appeared to be old enough to be out of their parents’ care, much less guarding the gates of the castle. Nevertheless, the Geneablogger approached the guards, explaining his predicament and entreating the guards to help him.

The only response of the guards, however, was that he should complete a form and describe his grievance.

After returning to his home by the beautiful bay, the Geneablogger waited and waited for help from the Facebook rulers. But, still, no help came.

Two months after he first wrote to the Facebook rulers, the Geneablogger decided to ride to the Facebook castle once again. Upon approaching the castle gate, the Geneablogger noticed that the three guards he saw on his first visit were no longer there, and he recoiled in terror at the thought of what horrible fate must have befallen the three who had previously guarded the castle gate.

Three new guards stood at the castle gate, and the Geneablogger begged these new guards for assistance. He asked if he could see someone in person who might be able to help, but he was told that there was no customer service at that castle. The Geneablogger asked if there was another castle in the realm where he might be able to speak to customer service, but he was told there was not. The Geneablogger asked if there was a phone number or an email address to a real person who might be able to help him but, once again, he was told there was not.

The Geneablogger rode away from the castle of Facebook, dejected and defeated. The faceless rulers of Facebook didn’t seem to care about their users.

Soon after returning home, the Geneablogger decided to check his blog for new comments. To his horror, after entering the URL for his blog, a red box appeared with the following message from McAfee Site Advisor:

“Even McAfee Site Advisor is warning people away from my blog! Will this horror never end?” the Geneablogger wailed. Now, with a new challenge to his blog’s reputation, he sent an email message to McAfee Site Advisor, appealing to the rulers of the Kingdom of McAfee for aid.

The very next day, a representative from the Kingdom of McAfee answered the Geneablogger’s entreaty, stating that “SiteAdvisor engineers will look into your issue, and will issue a change if it is deemed appropriate.” And the message was signed by a real person, not just a faceless nonentity!

To the Geneablogger’s further amazement, just two days after his original supplication for aid, the rulers of McAfee wrote to him again, stating that “SiteAdvisor senior engineers have cleared this domain for a green Web safety rating switch.”

The Geneablogger sighed with relief. In just two days, the rulers of the Kingdom of McAfee had solved his problem with McAfee Site Advisor, and had sent him two messages signed by a real person.

“If only the faceless rulers of Facebook cared about their users as much as the rulers of McAfee do,” mused the Geneablogger. “Perhaps, in the future, I should associate with those rulers and kingdoms who care about the well-being of their subjects and avoid those who who do not.”

He was baptized in the parish church in Krasne, Ciechanów Okręg, Płock Gubernia, Congress Kingdom of Poland on 28 December 1844.

Adam Chodkowski was my 2nd cousin, 4X removed.

The two witnesses, Franciszek Niedziałkowski and Walenty Niedziałkowski are also probably related to me because I know I had Niedziałkowski ancestors living in Mosaki Rukle in this same time period. I do not, however, have these two people in my database. I’ll have to search further to learn who these two men were.

She was baptized in the parish church in Krasne, Ciechanów Okręg, Płock Gubernia, Congress Kingdom of Poland on 06 May 1842.

There appeared Błażej Chodkowski residing in the village of [Mosaki] Rukle, owner of a part [of the village], thirty-one years of age, accompanied by Leon Chodkowski, twenty-seven years of age, /a/ together with Franciszek Niedziałkowski, twenty-seven years of age, both owners of a part [of the village] and residing in the village of Mosaki Rulke, and he showed Us a child of the female sex born in the village of [Mosaki] Rukle yesterday at the hour of three in the afternoon of his wife Agnieszka née Łyszkowska, twenty-one years of age. To this child at Holy Baptism performed on this day was given the name Julianna, and her Godparents were the afore-mentioned Leon Chodkowski and Konstancja his wife. The priest made an error in writing the record. He struck out the erroneous words and indicated his correction with the symbol /a/. In the margin he simply verified that he crossed out the words at the time the record was orignally written. In this way, the priest ensured that someone viewing the record in the future would not need to be concerned that the record was altered after the fact. The words he crossed out were “maiących obydwu”, meaning “of age, both”.

Julianna Chodkowska was my 2nd cousin, 4X removed.

Błażej Chodkowski was my 1st cousin, 5X removed.

Although this record states that Błażej’s first wife, Józefa Grzybowska, died on 09 February 1830, she actually died on 17 February 1836. Note the double dates throughout this record. The first part of the date is calculated in the Julian Calendar and the second part is calculated in the Gregorian Calendar. We use the Gregorian Calendar today.

In the year one-thousand eight-hundred seventeen, on the eighteenth day of the month of February at the hour of twelve noon, before Us, the Reverend Mikołaj Ruciński, Assistant Registrar of the Civil State, Krasne Gmina, Przasnysz Obwód in the Płock Voivodeship, there appeared the well-born Ignacy Ślaski, a bachelor who, according to a certificate submitted by Us which was extracted from the books of the Zielona parish church, is twenty years old, owner of land in Milewo Szwejki and now [doing service?] in Mosaki Rukle and residing there, in the accompaniment of his uncle, the well-born Piotr Gożdziewski, owner of land in Mosaki Głowki and residing there with his parents, the well-born Franciszek Ślaska and Petronela née Gożdziewski already [one word?], together with the well-born maiden Magdalena Chodkowska who, according to a certificate submitted by Us which was extracted from the books of the Krasne church, is twenty-one years old, residing in the home of her parents, in the accompaniment of her father the well-born Jan Chodkowski, owner of land in Mosaki Rukle and residing there, and her mother the well-born Józefata née Grzybowska Chodkowska. The parties who appeared demand that we proceed with the celebration of the marriage arranged between them, the announcement of which was made before the doors of our District House, that is: first on the second of the month of February and the second on the ninth day of that month is the same year at the hour of twelve noon on Sunday. When no impediment to the said marriage was revealed, and the families hereby consent, acquiescing therefore to the request of the parties, after reading all the aforementioned papers and section six in the title of the Civil Code regarding marriage, we asked the future husband and future wife whether they wished to join with each other in a marital union. When each of them responded separately that such is their wish, we proclaim in the name of the law that the well-born Ignacy Ślaski, bachelor, and the maiden Magdalena Chodkowska are joined in a marital union. The present document was read aloud to the declarants and was signed by Us, the Assistant Registrar of the Civil State, inasmuch as those people mentioned in the document are unable to write.

Magdalena née Chodkowska Ślaska, wife of Ignacy Ślaski, daughter of Jan Chodkowski and Józefata Grzybowska, died on 06 October 1836 in Mosaki Rukle, Przasnysz Obwód, Płock Voivodeship, Congress Kingdom of Poland. She was buried at the parish church in Krasne, Przasnysz Obwód, Płock Voivodeship, Congress Kingdom of Poland on 07 October 1836.

[Mosaki] Rukle. This happened in the village of Krasne on the twenty-fifth day of September / seventh day of October in the year one-thousand eight-hundred thirty-six at the hour of one in the afternoon. There appeared the well-born Błażej Chodkowski, twenty-five years of age, and Jan Chodkowski, fifty years of age, both owners of their parts [of the village] and residing in [Mosaki] Rukle, and they stated that yesterday at the hour of eight in the morning, Magdalena Chodkowska Ślaska died, widow after the death of her husband Ignacy Ślaski. After visual confirmation of the death of Ślaska, this document was read aloud to the declarants who are the brother of the deceased, and neither of whom knows how to write.

In the year one-thousand eight-hundred twelve, on the seventeenth day of the month of February at the hour of two in the afternoon, before Us, the Vicar and Preacher of the Parish of Krasne, Civil Registrar of the Krasne Gmina, Przasnysz Powiat in the Płock Department, there appeared the well-born Wojciech Gożdziewski, thirty years of age and residing in Głowko, owner of his parts [of the village], and he showed us a child of the female sex who was born in his home under the number one on the seventeenth day of the month of February of the same year at the hour of eight in the morning, stating to Us that she was born of him and his wife, Anna née Kierzkowska, twenty-six years of age, and that it is his wish to give her the name Józefa. After making the above statement and showing Us the child, in the presence of the well-born Józef Gożdziewski, forty-two years of age, residing in Głowko, owner of his parts [of the village], together with Wawrzeniec Osowski, settled in this village, owner of his parts [of the village] located in Antosy Gmina, sixty years of age, whereupon this birth document was read aloud and signed by Us inasmuch as the declaring parties and witnesses do not know how to write.
