Mosaki Rukle In the year one-thousand eight-hundred nine, on the eighth day of the month of July at the hour of eleven before noon, by Us, the pastor of Krasne performing the duties of the Civil Registrar of the District of Krasne, Przasnysz County in the Department of Płock, there appeared the well-born Jan Chotkowski, owner of a part [of the village], age fifty-three, residing in Mosaki-Rukle, and he showed us a child of the male sex, who was born in his home under the number four on the eighth day of July of the same year: stating that the child was begotten of him and his wife Józefa née Grzybowska thirty-seven years of age, and that it is his wish to give him the name Pius. After making the above statement and showing Us the child, in the presence of the well-born Jakub Mosakowski, owner of a part [of the village] age fifty residing in Mosaki-Rukle, together with Jacek Chotkowski, owner of a part [of the village] with the midwife of the same village in the District of Krasne who was forty-seven years of age. Whereupon the present certificate of birth was read aloud to the declarants and signed by Us inasmuch as none of the witnesses know how to write.
The Reverend Franciszek Sułkowski, Pastor of Krasne, discharging the duties of Civil Register.
Pius Chodkowski was my first cousin 5X removed.
The difference between this birth and baptismal record and that of Andrzej Chodkowski (Pius’ brother) from 1800 is striking. Andrzej’s record is written in Latin and contains minimal information. This one is written in Polish and is very detailed. The reason for the difference is that Andrzej’s record is a church record written before Napoleon took control of Poland, and this one is a civil registration record using the format established by Napoleon in 1808.
