On the thirty first of December, one thousand seven hundred eighty, by us, the undersigned pastor of Cap St. Ignace and the neighboring isles, was baptized Nicolas, son of Obein Gamache and Thérí¨se Sylvestre. The Godfather was Nicolas Sylvestre and the Godmother was Bale Gamache, who have declared that they do not know how to sign. The father was absent.

This record can be found as image 538/948 in the Québec Vital Records (Drouin Collection), 1621-1967 on Ancestry.com in the records for Parish of Cap St. Ignace, Montmagny County, Lower Canada, 1780. The record appears on the front of folio 36.

Unlike most other baptismal records from Lower Canada, Nicolas’ baptismal record does not specify the date of birth. In this time period, baptisms in the Roman Catholic Church were usually performed within two days after a birth.

Note that, in this record, the father’s name is spelled phonetically as Obein, rather than the proper spelling Aubin.
