The Gibson Family in the 1940 Albany City Directory

My aunt Sophie Danko Gibson was listed in the 1940 edition of Polk’s Albany (Albany County, N.Y.) City Directory residing at 17 Grant Ave, Albany, Albany Co., New York, USA with her husband Clark .  There were quite a number of people with the Gibson surname in the directory .  As far as I know, none of the other Gibson’s in the directory are related to Clark .  I have provided the first 11 entries in the directory; Clark and Sophie are the last entry in the clip provided.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the 1940 Albany City Directory Entry for the Gibson Family. The brief record states the following:

    • Clark Gibson, husband of Sophia D., worked as an ash collr (ash collector) and was head of household at 17 Grant Ave

Using Steve Morse’s One-Step Webpages, I learned that Clark and Sophia D. Gibson’s residence at 17 Grant Ave, Albany, Albany Co., New York, USA was located in enumeration district 63-119 in the 1940 United States Federal Census.

Incidentally, the occupation of ash collector apparently refers to people who move freight, stock, or other material.
