My Second Cousin Liliana is in Town!

My second cousin Liliana is in town!  She and her husband Valery are in San Francisco for a wedding and I surprised them by meeting them at San Francisco International Airport and bringing them to their hotel.  We spent a couple of hours together before I left them to rest up before the wedding tomorrow.

Liliana and I share great grandparents Wincenty Chmielewski and Anastasia Wojnowska.  Our grandmothers Helena and Ona were sisters, and, while many of the cousins I’ve mentioned on this blog are half-cousins, Liliana and I are full second cousins.

To give some background, our great grandfather Wincenty was married twice.  His first marriage to Scholastyka Woytczuka resulted in the birth of my half great uncle Joseph Meleski and my half great aunt Stefania Meleski.  My grandmother and Ona, however, were full sisters and were very close growing up in Lithuania.

I learned tonight from my cousin Liliana that Ona never spoke Lithuania until she was married, and that both of our grandmothers, although they lived in Lithuania, were Polish – not Lithuanian.

Liliana and I made tentative plans to travel to Lithuania in October to visit her relatives and see the villages where our Chmielewski ancestors lived.  Since Liliana was born and raised in Lithuania, this is a chance I can’t afford to let pass by!

So, in honor of Liliana’s visit, here’s a photo of my grandparents and their children:

The Birth of Anna May Gibson

Clark Gibson and his first wife Margaret Coyle had three children .  I’ve been able to find the Birth Record for only one of these children, namely Anna May Gibson.

  • Anna May Gibson was born live on 04 Sep 1916 in the City of St. Albans, Vermont;
  • She was white and the first child of her mother;
  • The mother, Margaret Coyle, was 22 years old, was born in Ireland, and was living in Fairfield;
  • The father, Clark Gibson, was a 22 year old farmer who was born in Fairfield, Vermont;
  • The name of the informant was H. H. Johnson and the City Clerk was BM Hopkins.

After the birth of her third child, Margaret Coyle Gibson returned to Ireland with the children, including Anna May .  Clark remained in the United States .  As far as anyone knows, Clark never heard from Margaret or her children again.

Peggy Yvonne Middleton a.k.a. Yvonne DeCarlo a.k.a. Lily Munster

Yvonne DeCarlo died on 08 Jan 2007 .  She was born Margaret Yvonne Middleton on 01 Sep 1922 in Vancouver, British Columbia, although the exact date of her date of birth is the subject of some speculation . Â Through her life, Margaret usually went by the name of Peggy .  Peggy’s father left in 1925, and when she was 15 years old, her mother brought her to Hollywood.

For a stage name, Peggy took her own middle name and her mother’s middle name to become Yvonne DeCarlo .  A beautiful young woman, Peggy began a successful career in motion pictures; one of her most important roles was as the wife of Moses in the film The Ten Commandments.

The role for which she is best known, however, was as Lily Munster on the television show The Munsters.

Peggy was born too late to be listed on the currently available Canadian Census Records, and she arrived in the United States too late to be listed on the currently available United States Census Records .  However, genealogical information about Peggy Yvonne Middleton is readily available on the internet, such as this clipping about her marriage to Robert Morgan.

The greatest source of records about Peggy on Ancestry.com is the Immigration Records, since she traveled frequently .  Being a Canadian Citizen, she had to register as an alien each time she entered the United States .  Peggy frequently traveled with Constance MacKenzie.

Based on this manifest, Peggy was born in 1924 and Constance was born in 1901 .  This manifest shows that the two women sailed in First Class on the S.S. Independence from Mallorca .  Constance traveled with 5 pieces of luggage .  Peggy traveled with 8 pieces of luggage .  I don’t even own 8 pieces of luggage.

Based on this manifest, Peggy and Constance have both become younger .  Although this manifest was prepared a year after the previous manifest, both Peggy and Constance have become a year younger .  Based on this information, Peggy was born in 1926, and Constance was born in 1903 .  This time, the two women traveled First Class on the S.S. United States from Southampton .  Constance traveled with 4 pieces of luggage and Peggy with 8.

By examining the immigration records at Ancestry.com, one can follow Peggy around the world in the 1940s and 1950s .  While most of our ancestors left behind only one passenger manifest, Peggy left dozens.

The Burial of Harriett (Fadden) Gibson

Harriett (Fadden) Gibson died less than two years after the death of her husband, Arnold R. Gibson .  An unusual aspect of her death is that she died, not in Vermont where she lived all her life .  She died in Albany, New York, and her body was removed to Worcester, Vermont to be buried next to her husband.

The Burial of Arnold Gibson

Arnold Gibson, Clark Gibson’s father, died on 14 Mar 1928 and was buried on 16 Mar 1928.

  • The permit was issued to Barber & Lanier, the undertakers for Arnold Gibson, in Montpelier, Montpelier County, Vermont;
  • Arnold R. Gibson died on 14 Mar 1928 age 68 years, 6 months, 27 days;
  • The cause of death was unknown, natural causes, sudden death, circumstances reported to States Attorney who authorized certificate without autopsy;
  • The proposed date of burial was 16 Mar 1928 and the proposed place of burial was Worcester, Vermont;
  • The manner of burial was usual;
  • The permit was signed by Jessie M. Putnam, Town Clerk, on 16 Mar 1928.

This permit was microfilmed along with the vital records for Vermont and appeared on the microfilm immediately following Arnold Gibson’s Death Certificate.

The manner of burial was described as “usual”, which makes me wonder what an “unusual” manner of burial would entail.

Neither the Death Certificate nor the Burial Permit for Arnold Gibson is more specific about the place of burial than Worcester, Vermont.

The Death of Arnold Gibson

I posted the Gibson family genealogy report yesterday without any sources, so today I’ll post one source .  I knew from my cousins that their father, Clark Gibson, was born in Fairfield, Vermont and that his parents were Arnold Gibson and Hattie Fadden .  I don’t qualify to obtain Clark’s death certificate, since New York State, where Clark died, restricts death records for 50 years .  Instead, I was able to obtain a copy of the Certificate of Death for Clark’s father, Arnold Gibson.

  • Arnold Gibson was a white male, born on 17 Aug 1859 in Island Pond, Vermont;
  • He was a farmer, married to Hattie Fadden;
  • His parents were Clark Gibson and Maryetta Olds, both born in Canada;
  • Arnold died at 5 AM on 14 Mar 1928 at the age of 68 years, 6 months, and 27 days in Worcester, Washington County, Vermont;
  • There was no medical attendance at the time of his death and the cause of death was reported as “unknown natural causes” and “sudden death;”
  • The circumstance of Arnold’s death were reported to the State Attorney who authorized a Certificate of Death without autopsy;
  • Arnold was buried in Worcester, Vermont on 16 Mar 1928 by Barber & Lavier of Montpelier, Vermont;
  • Mrs. Arnold R. Gibson of Worcester, Vermont provided the personal and statistical particulars;
  • Clarence H. Burr, M.D. of Montpelier signed the Certificate of Death on 14 Mar 1928;
  • Jessie M. Putnam, Town Clerk filed the record on 15 Mar 1928.

The information about Arnold’s birthplace on this Certificate of Death disagrees with that in some other sources, which state that Arnold was born in Alburg, New York .  Discovering Arnold’s place of birth may require additional investigation .  This record provides very useful information on finding further records for Arnold and his parents.

Of interest is the place of death at the top of the page .  The words “City (or) town” are struck through .  I assume this was done because Worcester, Vermont did not have the status of a city or town .  The 1920 US Federal Census listed Worcester as a township.

The Descendants of John Gibson

A new comment was posted today on The Lost Family of Clark Gibson. The author of the comment was the granddaughter of Clark Gibson. Clark had been married twice, the first time to Margaret Coyle who, for reasons unknown, packed up her three children and moved back to Ireland. After Margaret’s departure, Clark married my Aunt Sophie Danko.

Eighty years after Margaret Coyle Gibson returned to Ireland, I found a message posted on the internet by Margaret’s great-grandson and was able to reconnect the family in the United Kingdom with the family in the United States.

The only reason I found the message on the internet was because I had begun to research Clark Gibson’s ancestry. The following report describes Clark’s family. I have deleted the names of anyone who I believe may still be living. I have also listed this genealogy report and the reports on other family lines under “PAGES” in the sidebar.
