Ma's Skirt

When I was in Lithuania last year, I visited my cousin Romualda in Panevėžys. Romualda’s mother Anna and my grandmother Helena were sisters. In my family, my grandmother was known simply as “Ma”. Anna and Ma were very close, and when Ma left for America at the age of 16, Anna could not be consoled for weeks.

My visit last year was the first time anyone from Ma’s family had returned to Lithuania since Helena left in 1913. Romualda and I shared news and photographs, and then Romualda gave me a gift that I treasure: a skirt my great-grandmother Anastasia made for Ma 100 years ago.

Ma's Skirt

Ma’s Skirt

SOURCE: Ma’s Skirt (San Francisco, San Francisco, California). Photographed by Stephen J. Danko on 01 Sep 2008.

I was completely unprepared to receive such a generous gift. Both Anna and Romualda after her had lovingly preserved this skirt for 94 years.

The skirt is woven from gold and black wool and includes delicate details of fabric and thread that, at first glance, I thought were buttons. The craftsmanship is exquisite. Every seam is perfectly straight. I tried to examine the stitches, but could barely see the thread.

The fabric shows significant signs of wear. Romualda told me that she washed the skirt once. She noticed that several small holes in the fabric grew larger after washing, so she never washed it again.

This skirt is the oldest family heirloom I have. Now it’s my duty to be sure that it’s preserved for future generations.

Reasons to Conduct a Genetic Genealogy Test Now

I recently had my Y-DNA and mtDNA tested at Family Tree DNA, and several other family members have had their Y-DNA tested.

I thought about having a DNA test done long before I actually took the plunge and finally opted to have my DNA tested at FamilyTreeDNA. I’ve been very pleased with both the service and results.

Now, both FamilyTreeDNA and Ancestry.com are offering reduced prices on DNA tests and the reduced prices may persuade some fence-sitters to jump into the DNA pool.

Family Tree DNA offers the following sale prices until September 30, 2008:

  • A 12 marker Y-DNA test that normally sells for $189 is now $99 and comes with a free mtDNA test.
  • A 25 marker Y-DNA test that normally sells for $238 is now $148 and comes with a free mtDNA test.
  • A 37 marker Y-DNA test that normally sells for $189 is now $119.
  • A 37 marker Y-DNA+mtDNA that normally sells for $339 is now $189.
  • A 67 marker Y-DNA test that normally sells for $269 is now $218.
  • A 67 marker Y-DNA+mtDNAplus test that normally sells for $409 is now $288.
  • A mtDNAplus test that normally sells for $189 is now $149.

Ancestry.com offers the following sale prices to members until September 30, 2008:

  • A 33 marker Y-DNA test that normally sells for $149 is now $73.50.
  • A 46 marker Y-DNA test that normally sells for $199 is now $99.50.
  • A mtDNA test that normally sells for $179 is now $89.50.

Be aware that the FamilyTreeDNA and Ancestry.com tests don’t test exactly the same markers. I understand that, in the mtDNA tests, FamilyTreeDNA sequences a longer stretch of DNA than Ancestry.com does.

I also understand that Ancestry.com’s 46 marker test includes three markers (19b, 464e, 464f) that FamilyTreeDNA does not include in any of their standard tests. FamilyTreeDNA’s 67 marker test, likewise, includes 24 markers that none of Ancestry.com’s tests cover.

If now is the right time for you to take a genetic genealogy test, be sure to place your order before September 30, 2008 to qualify for these reduced prices. If you plan to send a check rather than place an online order with a credit card, be sure your check arrives before the deadline.

Note: According to Tanguay, this infant was named Marie.

Apparently, the given name of the infant was not recorded on the original record. The record shown here appears to be a relatively recent transcript and identified the name of the child based on Tanguay.
