24, A

Early in the morning of August 2, between 2 and 3 o’clock, a daughter was born to the local citizen and linen weaver, Johannes Reinhard Lather and his wife, Maria Catharina [one word?] Christian, and on the 3th of the same month, the child was brought for Holy Baptism by Anna Sophia Dorothea, wife legitimate daughter of the local citizen and shoemaker Conrad Lather, and was named Anna Sophia Dorothea.

The document shows that the scribe incorrectly reported that the Sponsor was Anna Dorothea, wife of Conrad Lather, but then corrected the record to show that the Sponsor was Sophia Dorothea, daughter of Conrad Lather. Unfortunately, the scribe did not reveal the relationship between Conrad Lather and Johann Reinhard Lather, although it is likely that Conrad Lather and Johann Reinhard Lather were half-brothers. If this is correct, then the sponsor would be Conrad’s wife, Anna Dorothea Eymer.

Bearded Iris

On my most recent visit to Filoli, there were more Bearded Irises in bloom than I had ever seen there before. The flowers of Bearded Irises include three petals, also called Standards (the upward curving parts of the flowers) and three sepals, also called Falls (the downward curving parts of the flowers). The beards are the fuzzy parts on the Falls.

At about seven o’clock in the evening of November fifteenth in the year of the Lord eighteen-hundred fifty-six, after a credible report, the eighth child and second son was born to Balthasar Lather, citizen and tailor here, and his wife Elisabetha Katharina née Lather and, on the fifth of the following month, the child was baptized and given the name:

          Konrad

The sponsor was:

Konrad Lather, surviving son of the deceased Georg Lather, former citizen and farmer here, the father’s half-brother. Because he was absent, the local midwife, Anna Elisabetha Rullmann stood in his place, and signed the present document next to the father and me, the minister who performed the baptism.

[signed] Anna Elisabetha Rullmann
[signed] Balthasar Lather
          [signed] Ludwig Ebal
                          Minister

There are apparently two errors in this document. The first error is that the mother’s name should be Elisabetha Margaretha Lather, not Elisabetha Katharina Lather. The second error is that, while this indeed is the eighth child, it is also the third, not the second son.

The sponsor, Konrad Lather, is described as Balthasar Lather’s half-brother, and this is true. The two men shared a father (Johann Georg Lather), but Balthasar’s mother was Anna Elisabetha Becker, and Konrad’s mother was Helena Hissrich.

Orchids in the Filoli Greenhouses

This past weekend was the annual flower show at the Filoli estate in Woodside, California. Visitors to Filoli are rarely given the opportunity to tour the greenhouses, but this weekend was an exception. While there, I photographed several of the orchids in bloom in the greenhouses.
