While at Notre Dame Cemetery in Worcester, Massachusetts, I found the grave of Bernard J. Izbicki and Albert F. Blackman.

The information in my database shows that these two people were the former husbands of my cousin, Anastasia Rita Meleski, both of whom predeceased her.

Anastasia Rita Meleski’s first husband was Albert Francis Blackman, son of Clifford Austin Blackman and Jane A. Goodrich, who was born in about 1915 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA and died on 11 July 1966 in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA. Anastasia Rita and Albert Francis Blackman were married on 08 May 1946 in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA.

Anastasia Rita Meleski’s second husband was Bernard Joseph Izbicki, son of Dominik Izbicki and Józefata Marianna Bizewska, who was born on 12 May 1910 in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA and who died on 30 April 1985 in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA. Anastasis Rita and Bernard Joseph Izbicki were married in 1968 in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA.

The cemetery record for Bernard Izbicki from the Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA states that:

I do not have a copy of the cemetery record for Albert Francis Blackman. I would guess that Anastasia Rita purchased the cemetery plot for Albert Francis Blackman and then, when her second husband Bernard Izbicki died, she buried Bernard in the same plot as Albert.

Anastasia Rita herself is buried with her parents.

The information in my database shows that these two people are Bolesław Dominik Izbicki, son of Dominik Izbicki and Józefata Marianna Bizewska, who was born on 08 December 1874 in Piertanie, Vistula Land, Russian Empire and who died in 1937 in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA; and Wiktoria Kruczyńska, daughter of Kazimierz Kruczyński and Elżbieta Maslowska, who was born in about 1880 in Vistula Land, Russian Empire and died in 1948 in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA. The couple was married on 10 June 1900 in St. Casimir’s Church, Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA.

The 2009 Conference of the Polish Genealogical Society of Connecticut and the Northeast

The 2009 Conference of the Polish Genealogical Society of Connecticut and the Northeast is now history. I heard comments that this was the best conference the society has ever hosted.

I presented two lectures and one panel discussion. I only attended two lectures (the very first lecture presented by Kahlile Mehr on “East European Internet Sites” and the very last lecture presented by Lisa Alzo on “Slovak Land or No Man’s Land: Finding Your Slovak and Rusyn Roots.”

I spent most of my time at the conference giving consultations. I hope the people who consulted with me left with some useful ideas. At least two of the people left knowing that the Family History Library holds microfilms that may be of interest to them in their search for Eastern European ancestors.

Tonight will have to be an early night. I’m headed for Ellis Island tomorrow morning!

Researching at the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics

This morning I went to the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics in Dorchester to continue researching the Izbicki family.

The research room has cut back their hours and is now open Mondays and Thursdays 2:00-4:30 PM and Tuesdays and Fridays 9:00AM-Noon. The research room is closed on Wednesdays. The reason given for the reduced number of hours is budgetary. Such a reason is hard to imagine since the research room has always been very busy when I’ve been there and the Registry of Vital Records and Statistics charges each user $9 per hour to use the facility.

I spent three hours in the research room today at a cost of $27 (about the same as a one month World Deluxe subscription to Ancestry.com). Considering that there are indexes at the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics that are available nowhere else, and considering that the Registry allows patrons to view vital records before purchasing a copy, I think the cost is reasonable.

Copies of vital records are $18 in person and $28 by mail, although I’ve never understood why a certified record should cost $10 more if ordered by mail rather than in person. If ordered through the town where the event was recorded, certified copies of vital records generally cost less (for example, records purchased through the Worcester City Clerk’s office cost $12 in person and $14 if purchased through the mail). Unfortunately, the City Clerk’s office does not allow patrons access to the indexes and does not allow patrons to view the documents before purchasing them.

Nonetheless, I was able to complete my search of the vital records indexes that I started at the New England Historic Genealogical Society yesterday. The NEHGS indexes are incomplete, and so I searched for the surname Izbicki in:

Birth Indexes 1951-Present;
Marriage Indexes 1956-Present;
Death Indexes 1981-Present.

In these indexes I found 15 relevant birth records, 11 relevant marriage records, and 8 relevant death records. There may be more relevant records than this, but I would have to go back and view the other records before I could tell for sure. Given that in three hours I was only allowed to view 17 records, I would need at least another two days at the Registry before I could view all the other possibly relevant records. I could, of course, order the records blindly at $28 each, but I think I have better uses for my money.

After the research room closed at noon, I headed to New Britain, Connecticut for the 2009 Conference of the Polish Genealogical Society of Connecticut and the Northeast. More on that tomorrow.

Researching the Izbicki Family

At NEHGS today, I researched the Izbicki family of Worcester, Massachusetts.

Researching the Quintin Family

I spent a few hours today at the New England Historic Genealogical Society and, with the help of Michael Leclerc, set out to verify some of the information on the ancestors of my Uncle Fred’s wife, Janice Quintin.

We were able to verify that Janice’s father, Leopold Francois Quintin, was born on 02 Jun 1887 and was baptized on 05 Jun 1887 in Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Fall River, Massachusetts. His parents were listed as Stanislas Quintin and Henriette Benoit. We also confirmed that he married Philomene Fontaine on 01 Jun 1915 in St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Fall River, Massachusetts. All this information was obtained from:

Burkhart, Janice, and Lucile McDonald, eds.. 2005. Baptisms of Notre-Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Fall River, Massachusetts, 1874-2001. Vol. 3. Woonsocket, R.I.: American-French Genealogical Society.

Unfortunately, proving the parents of Stanislas Quintin and Henriette Benoit was a bit of a challenge. The couple was married on 08 Jan 1882 in Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church, Fall River, Massachusetts, but the parents of the couple were not named in the church record:

Upon checking the civil marriage record, we learned that Stanislas Quintin was the son of Joseph and Charlotte Quintin, and that Henriette Fontaine was the daughter of Francis and Louise Fontaine. The maiden names of the mothers were not provided in the civil marriage record. However, both Stanislas Quintin and Henriette Fontaine were reported to have been born in Canada.

After checking the Drouin marriage index, the marriage of Joseph Quintin and Charlotte Brunel was discovered in the Registres de Paroisse Ste Anne, Varennes 1844-1848 on the verso of fond 18. They were married on 28 Jan 1845. Joseph Quintin’s parents were listed as Joseph Quintin and Apolline Brunel. Charlotte Brunel’s parents were listed as Michel Brunel and Josephte Galaise.

However, the marriage record of Joseph Quintin from 12 Sep 1820 in Varennes shows that his wife’s maiden name was Apolline Daunais, not Apolline Brunel. To verify the maiden name of Appoline was Brunel or Daunais, we turned to the Notarial Records and found the marriage contract between Joseph Quintin and Charlotte Brunel was among the records of Marc-Amable Girard in Sorel, Richelieu District. Unfortunately, the NEHGS does not have a copy of this marriage contract, but the contract should be in the holdings of the Provincial Library and Archives Quebec, so I can get a copy there.

The 1820 marriage record of Joseph Quintin and Apolline Daunais shows that Joseph’s parents were Joseph Quintin (deceased) and Marie Josephte Provost, and Apolline Daunaise’s parents were Basile Daunaise and Louise Blain.

I’ll continue this research tomorrow.

Away Again, Away Again

I’m heading off to the Northeast to attend the 2009 Conference of the Polish Genealogical Society of Connecticut and the Northeast.

I’ll be presenting two lectures: “Polish Court Records” on Friday, August 7, and “Genealogy and the Changing Map of Eastern Europe” on Saturday, August 8.

Other speakers are Lisa Alzo, Matthew Bielawa, Mieczyslaw B. Biskupski, Linda Blaser, William F. Hoffman, Aleksandra Kacprzak, Brian J. Lenius, Kahlile Mehr, and Thomas Sadauskas. For the first time, this conference will include two tracks of lectures.

I plan to do a little sightseeing, do a little genealogy research, and catch up with some friends and relatives.

Besides the conference, some of the highlights of my trip will be visits to the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, and to Ellis Island and the Tenement Museum in New York.

I’m very excited about this trip. It should be a lot of fun!

Elisabetha Christina Lather, daughter of Johann Friedrich Daub and wife of Andreas Lather, died in Kirtorf, Alsfeld Kreis, Hessen-Darmstadt (now Germany) on 01 Aug 1740. She was buried at the parish church in Kirtorf, Alsfeld Kreis, Hessen-Darmstadt (now Germany) on 03 Aug 1740.

Elisabetha Catharina’s surname is spelled as Taub in some records such as this one, but at Daub in other records. I have used the spelling Daub in my own database.
