Update on Three Men in Uniform

My previous post on the mystery photograph of three men in uniform found among family photos at my grandparents’ house in Worcester, Massachusetts generated some helpful hints about the photograph.

Three Men in Uniform

Three Men in Uniform

SOURCE: Three Men in Uniform (location unknown). Possibly photographed, reproduced, or mounted by Knight Photographic Studio in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA in about 1892-1913.

The board on which the photographed is mounted states “Knight, Worcester, Mass”. A review of the Worcester, Massachusetts City Directories shows that, in 1885-1886 and 1887, James H. Knight was a partner in Bennet & Knight, photographers. In 1892, 1909, and 1913, James H. Knight, is listed alone as a photographer . James does not appear in the 1918 or 1920 directories.

Based on this information, James Knight was operating his own photography business from about 1892-1913, so I think that would have been the most likely time period for this photo if it was originally taken by James Knight. However, the original photograph may not have been taken by James Knight. He may have reproduced copies of the original photograph or, perhaps, the photograph was merely mounted on a board from his studio.

My friend Carolyn passed on this advice she had received from a friend: “If there is a sword or boots, always check for spurs, those three together are a dead giveaway for a cavalry unit.” Since these uniforms all include a sword, boots, and spurs, perhaps these uniforms are cavalry uniforms. But from what cavalry?

The next clue was discovered in the emblem on the caps of the three men.

This emblem bears striking similarity to the state emblem of the Russian Empire of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both emblems show a double-headed eagle holding a scepter and the globus cruciger(globe with a cross) . Â  Both eagle heads wear a crown and a larger crown appears above them.

SOURCE: Wikipedia.org, State Emblem of the Russian Empire; digital image http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Coat_of_Arms_of_Russian_Empire.svg : accessed 08 Sep 2009.

Since my grandfather lived in a part of Poland that had been annexed by the Russian Empire, it would make sense that military uniforms from the area where he lived would bear the state emblem of the Russian Empire.

So, it appears that these three men are wearing cavalry uniforms of the Russian Empire, and it is possible that the photo was brought over by or sent to my grandfather, Kostanty Niedziałkowski. Who, exactly, these three men are remains a mystery.

Niedziałkowski Marriages in Lipowiec from 1654-1680

I searched the marriages records from the Parish of Lipowiec, Ciechanów Land, Mazovian Voivodeship, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1654-1680 and discovered the following entries for the surname Niedziałkowski:

  • ?? Jul 1668:  Kararzyna Niedziałkowska [place of residence not provided], and Wawrzeniec Szuwienski? (image 39)
  • 06 Feb 1673:  Anna Niedziałkowska of Lipowiec and Marcin Nalatoski? (image 41)
  • 06 Oct 1674:  Marianna Niedziałkowska of Niedziałki and Tomasz Obowski? (image 42)
  • 05 Oct 1675:  Dorota Niedziałkowska of Niedziałki and Jakub Bunkowski? (image 42)
  • 20 ??? 1677:  Elisabetha Niedziałkowska of Lipowiec and Franciszek Bebolpewo? (image 42)

The handwriting in these registers was difficult to read and, unfortunately, I was not able to determine the correct spelling for most of the grooms. The fact that there are no Niedziałkowski grooms in these records probably reflects the fact that the marriages were usually conducted in the bride’s home parish. The Niedziałkowski men (if any) probably married brides in different parishes.

Niedziałkowski Baptisms in Lipowiec from 1653-1694

I searched the birth and baptismal records from the Parish of Lipowiec, Ciechanów Land, Mazovian Voivodeship, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1653-1694 today and discovered the following entries for the surname Niedziałkowski:

  • 10 Mar 1654:  Gregorz, [birthplace not provided], son of [first name illegible] and Ewa Niedziałkowski (image 30)
  • 18 Mar 1668:  Katarzyna, born in Niedziałki, daughter of Kacper and Katarzyna Niedziałkowski (image 21)
  • ?? Apr 1673:  Wojciech, born [birthplace not provided], son of Kacper and Katarzyna Niedziałkowski (image 14)
  • 01 Nov 1676:  Mikolaj, born in Niedziałki, son of Jan and Marianna Niedziałkowski (image 12)
  • 12 Sep 1686:  Marianna, born in Lipowiec, daughter of Wojciech and Aleksandra Niedziałkowski (image 44, repeated in image 45)
  • 01 Jan 1694:  Pawel, born in Niedziałki, son of Jan and [first name not provided] Niedziałkowski (image 7)
  • Date cannot be determined with certainly but possibly was around Aug 1694?, Teresa, born in Niedziałki, daughter of Grzegorz and Anna Niedziałkowski (image 6)

The handwriting in these registers was difficult to read. To make matters worse, some of the pages appear to be missing, and records for some years are missing entirely. To add insult to injury, the records for a given year were in the correct chronological order, but the records for the most recent years appear at the beginning of the book and the records for the earliest years appear at the end of the birth records. In addition, except for the first record of the year, the year of the individual records simply state “year as above” or worse “year, month, and day as above”. And, if that weren’t bad enough, one baptismal record was recorded among the marriage records!

None of these names fit in with my Niedziałkowski genealogy yet, although I have very little information about my own Niedziałkowski ancestors from this time period.

Niedziałkowski Baptisms in Lipowiec from 1718-1747

I searched the birth and baptismal records from the Parish of Lipowiec, Ciechanów Land, Mazovian Voivodeship, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from 1718-1747 today and discovered the following entries for the surname Niedziałkowski:

  • 01 Jan 1720:  Melchior, [birthplace not provided], son of Franciszek and Elena Niedziałkowski (p. 11)
  • 12 Oct 1721:  Jadwiga, born in Niedziałki, daughter of Mikołaj and Zuzanna Niedziałkowski (p. 22)
  • 09 Apr 1724:  Wojciech, born in Niedziałki, son of Mikołaj and Zuzanna Niedziałkowski (p.40)
  • 30 Nov 1724:  Andrzej, born in Niedziałki, son of Bartłomiej and Teresa Niedziałkowski (p. 43)
  • 30 Nov 1724:  Barbara, born in Niedziałki, daughter of Adam and Katarzyna Niedziałkowski (p. 44)
  • 29 Oct 1726:  [No name provided], born in Niedziałki, child of Adam and [No name provided] Niedziałkowski (p.55)
  • 17 Jan 1703:  Antoni, born in [Szyrgały?], illegitimate son of Bibianna Niedziałkowska (p.91)
  • 06 Nov 1733:  Andrzej, born in Niedziałki, son of Jakub and Aleksandra Niedziałkowski (p. 94)
  • 02 Feb 1736:  Walenty, [birthplace not provided], son of Jakub and Aleksandra Niedziałkowski (p. 107)
  • 20 Nov 1738:  Stanisław, born in Niedziałki, son of Jakub and Aleksandra Niedziałkowski (p. 123)
  • 24 Aug 1741:  Bartłomiej, born in Niedziałki, son of Jakub and Felicjanna Niedziałkowski (p. 139)
  • 17 Nov 1743:  Marianna, born in Niedziałki, daughter of Jakub and Aleksandra Niedziałkowski (p.152)
  • 17 Sep 1746:  Chryzostom, born in Niedziałki, son of Jakub and Aleksandra Niedziałkowski (p.170)

In these entries, the dates are presumably the dates of the baptisms, not the births. The maiden surnames of the mothers were not recorded. In the 29 Oct 1726 entry, the name of the child and the child’s mother were not provided . Only one Niedziałkowski birth was illegitimate, that of Antoni, son of Bibianna Niedziałkowska.

Most of these families resided in the village of Niedziałki, the “great nest” of the Niedziałkowski surname. The birthplaces of two of the children were not provided. The birthplace of Antoni, the illegitimate child, appears to be “Szyrgały”, but I cannot find the location of this place, if it was a place at all.

Researching Polish Court Records

As far as I have been able to determine most, if not all, of my mother’s ancestors were members of the Nobility.

The Polish Nobility or Szlachta arose in the Middle Ages and existed until officially abolished in 1921. Nobility was most often inherited, although Nobility could also be achieved by adoption or by action of the King or the Sejm.

The Polish Nobility included between 6.6% and 8% of the total population of Poland and between 16% and 25% of all ethnic Poles.

Members of the Nobility enjoyed privileges that the general population did not. Most owned land and engaged in financial transactions that were recorded in the Polish courts of law. Many of these Polish court records still exist, although most have not been indexed. Few (if any) of these Polish court records are available through the Family History Library.

Many Polish court records are archived by the Polish State Archives, specifically in the Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych (AGAD), or the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw.

While most of these records have not been indexed, Marek Minakowski has assembled a database of those records that have been indexed on his Ancestors website at http://www.przodkowie.com/agad/ .

I have been searching through those indexed records and have found quite a number that appear to relate to my ancestors. Those that appear to refer to my ancestors include:

  • MZW – Makowskie Ziemskie Wieczyste
  • PZW - Przasnyskie Ziemskie Wieczyste
  • WGW - Wyszogrodzkie Grodzkie Wieczyste
  • ZGW - Zakroczymskie Grodzkie Wieczyste

The records include debitum (debt), dług (debt), inwentarz (inventory), kwit (receipt), obligatio (bond), sprzedaż (sale), wymiana gruntów (exchange of land), and zastaw (pledge, deposit).

I am looking forward to obtaining copies of these records that document events in my ancestors’ lives.

Summary of the Nienadowa Field Sketches – 1854

The 1854 field sketch maps of Nienadowa, Galicia (now Poland) consist of 19 individual maps, 10 of which were copied as part of the Gesher Galicia Cadastral Map and Landowner Records Inventory.

I received copies of these maps in August and have spent the past couple of weeks digitizing and reassembling the maps. The original maps were copied onto A3 paper, and most of the maps were copied in two or three sections. Unfortunately, some of the maps were copied at 90% scale and others were copied at 100% scale. I attempted to digitize these maps so that the original tiff images are all at the same scale, recombined the multiple sections when necessary, and then made an effort to clean up the maps.

The ten maps that were copied fit together as shown below:

Nienadowa Field Sketch Maps - 1854

Nienadowa Field Sketch Maps - 1854

Digital images of the individual maps can be found as the following blog entries:

I was told that the remaining maps (Maps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 15) had no houses on them and, therefore, were not copied. I am certain that at least some of the remaining maps do, indeed, have houses on them.

In fact, the house of my third great grandfather, Wojciech Dańko,  is probably on Map 15. His land extends from Map 10, through Map 15, and into Map 17.

The land held by another third great grandfather, Wojciech Sowa, appears on Map 18.

My next task will be to index these maps in order to begin a one-village study of Nienadowa.
