I previously published the death record and burial permit for Arnold Gibson and the burial permit for Hattie Fadden Gibson . Arnold and Hattie were married in Sheldon, Vermont in 1885.

Click on the link for a PDF copy of the Marriage Record for Arnold Gibson – 1885 . The record states:
-
Arnold Gibson and Hattie Fadden were married on 1 Jul 1885 in Sheldon, Vermont;
-
Arnold was born in Alburgh;
-
Arnold was 23 years old at the time of marriage and this marriage was his first marriage;
-
Arnold’s parents were Clark Gibson and Mariette [no surname given]; the birthplaces of Clark and Mariette are not provided;
-
W. N. Roberts, a minister, officiated at the marriage;
-
The document includes the number P599 and is documented by E. M. Brown, Town Clerk in Sheldon.
In Vermont, the marriage records for this period are recorded on separate cards . This card is for the groom.
The birthplace for Arnold Gibson, as stated on this record, is Alburgh in Grand Isle County, Vermont . This conflicts with the information on Arnold’s Death Certificate, which stated he was born in Island Pond, Essex County, Vermont.

Hi Steve,
You know I love these Vermont records, and I wanted to let you know there is an Alburg, Vermont. The county is Grand Isle, it is next to New York and borders Canada.
There is a wonderful book, Genealogist’s Handbook for New England Research edited by Marcia D. Melnyk that covers the 6 states, and lists all the towns with counties for each state. It is 3 feet from where I sit, so it was very easy to check it out. Also, I have lines from Alburg.
Steve, you can delete this comment if you wish. Barb It is FYI for you.
Thank you so much, Barbara! I wouldn’t dream of deleting this comment. I wish more people would point out errors or provide alternate viewpoints.
I checked a map for the locations of Alburg, Grand Isle Co., Vermont; Alburg, Franklin Co., New York; and Island Pond, Essex Co., Vermont (the maps spell the names of the towns “Alburg” rather than “Alburgh”).
Based on the facts that Arnold Gibson and Hattie Fadden married in Sheldon, Franklin Co., Vermont and raised their family in Fairfield, Franklin Co., Vermont, the closest location for Arnold’s birth would be Alburg, Grand Isle Co., Vermont. The other two towns are quite some distance from any location where the family ever lived.
I’ll correct my files to reflect the fact that Arnold was probably born in Alburg, Grand Isle Co., Vermont.
The Alburg location was probably provided by Arnold himself in his Marriage Record. I have no idea who provided the Island Pond location mentioned in Arnold’s Death Certificate.
Also, since Arnold’s Marriage Record in Vermont does not specify the state, I should have assumed the state was Vermont, not New York.
Thanks so much for your help!
