{"id":962,"date":"2007-01-12T23:30:43","date_gmt":"2007-01-13T06:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2007\/01\/12\/my-second-cousin-liliana-is-in-town\/"},"modified":"2019-08-28T15:58:29","modified_gmt":"2019-08-28T22:58:29","slug":"my-second-cousin-liliana-is-in-town","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/962","title":{"rendered":"My Second Cousin Liliana is in Town!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My second cousin Liliana is in town!&nbsp; She and her husband Valery are in San Francisco for a wedding and I surprised them by meeting them at San Francisco International Airport and bringing them to their hotel.&nbsp; We spent a couple of hours together before I left them to rest up before the wedding tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liliana and I share great grandparents Wincenty Chmielewski and Anastasia Wojnowska.&nbsp; Our grandmothers Helena and Ona were sisters, and, while many of the cousins I&#8217;ve mentioned on this blog are half-cousins, Liliana and I are full second cousins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To give some background, our great grandfather Wincenty was married twice.&nbsp; His first marriage to Scholastyka Woytczuka resulted in the birth of my half great uncle Joseph Meleski and my half great aunt Stefania Meleski.&nbsp; My grandmother and Ona, however, were full sisters and were very close growing up in Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned tonight from my cousin Liliana that Ona never spoke Lithuania until she was married, and that both of our grandmothers, although they lived in Lithuania, were Polish &#8211; not Lithuanian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liliana and I made tentative plans to travel to Lithuania in October to visit her relatives and see the villages where our Chmielewski ancestors lived.&nbsp; Since Liliana was born and raised in Lithuania, this is a chance I can&#8217;t afford to let pass by!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in honor of Liliana&#8217;s visit, here&#8217;s a photo of my grandparents and their children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/01\/MaPaFamily.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/01\/MaPaFamily.jpg\" alt=\"The Niedzialkowski Family\"\/><\/a><figcaption> <strong>The Niedzialkowski Family<br><\/strong>SOURCE: The Niedzialkowski Family (Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA); photographed by unknown photographer in about 1926.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From the left: Fred, Jane, Helena (Chmielewski \/ Meleski), Henry, Kostanty, Nat, and Ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of my favorite photographs .\u00a0 Just look at those knickers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><span class=\"cat-links\"><span class=\"entry-utility-prep entry-utility-prep-cat-links\">Copyright \u00a9 2007 by Stephen J.
