{"id":9314,"date":"2010-08-23T23:00:35","date_gmt":"2010-08-24T06:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/index.php\/archives\/9314"},"modified":"2010-08-23T23:00:35","modified_gmt":"2010-08-24T06:00:35","slug":"the-canals-of-amsterdam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/9314","title":{"rendered":"The Canals of Amsterdam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While in Amsterdam, I walked along Raadhuisstraat and took photos as I crossed each of the major canals of Amsterdam .\u00a0 The first, the Singel was originally the moat around the medieval city of Amsterdam until 1585 .\u00a0The Herengracht (Patrician&#8217;s Canal) was named after the heren regeerders who governed the city in the 16th and 17th centuries .\u00a0The Keizersgracht (Emperor&#8217;s Canal) is named after Maximilian I, the Holy Roman Emperor. The Prinsengrach (Prince&#8217;s Canal) was named after the Prince of Orange. To the casual observer,\u00a0one canal looks pretty much the same as another, although I&#8217;m sure a resident of Amsterdam could easily identify which is which from the photos.
