{"id":701,"date":"2006-10-25T22:32:30","date_gmt":"2006-10-26T05:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/10\/25\/the-catholic-cemetery-in-dubiecko\/"},"modified":"2006-10-25T22:32:30","modified_gmt":"2006-10-26T05:32:30","slug":"the-catholic-cemetery-in-dubiecko","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/701","title":{"rendered":"The Catholic Cemetery in Dubiecko"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I was in Poland in October 2000, I visited the Catholic Cemetery there .\u00a0 I thought I might look for the surnames of my relatives there, but I had heard that most graves in Poland are rented, not purchased, so I didn&#8217;t expect to find the graves of any of my ancestors .\u00a0 Nonetheless, my traveling companions and I searched the entire cemetery for relevant surnames.<\/p>\n<p>While we were searching, there were several elderly Polish women who were in the cemetery, sweeping fallen leaves off the graves .\u00a0 These women were very curious about us and kept watching us as we walked up and down the rows of graves .\u00a0 Finally, one of the women came up to us and asked us whose grave we were trying to find, and we told\u00c2\u00a0her that we were looking for the graves of the\u00c2\u00a0Da\u0144kos .\u00a0 The woman&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0first reaction was to ask &#8220;The Da\u0144kos from Nienadowa?&#8221; .\u00a0 And, of course, she was correct.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00c2\u00a0showed this woman a list of other surnames for which I was searching .\u00a0 She saw one of these names &#8211; Sawa &#8211; and she said the name was probably Sowa, not Sawa .\u00a0 Later, I found out she was, once again, correct.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Dubiecko Cemetery 2\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/10\/Dubiecko_Cemetery_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image698\" style=\"width: 455px; height: 318px\" height=\"318\" alt=\"Dubiecko Cemetery 4 Danko\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/10\/Dubiecko_Cemetery_4.jpg\" width=\"451\" \/><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">If you look at the crucifix on the grave of Katarzyna and Stanis\u0142aw Da\u0144ko, you&#8217;ll notice that the lower part, the body, is missing .\u00a0 If you further look at the crucifix on the grave on Jan Da\u0144ko, you&#8217;ll notice that the lower part does not seem to be in proportion to the upper part -\u00c2\u00a0each arm\u00c2\u00a0is as long as the entire body .\u00a0 Finally, if you compare the two crucifixes, you&#8217;ll notice that it looks like the lower part of the crucifix from Katarzyna and Stanis\u0142aw&#8217;s grave was placed on the grave of Jan .\u00a0 I wonder what was going on here?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Also notice that most of the graves appear to be tombs built above ground .\u00a0 I\u00c2\u00a0wonder if this is because these graves were built on top of other graves, after the grave rental expired on the older graves.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">For more\u00c2\u00a0information on\u00c2\u00a0cemeteries in Poland and the significance of All Saint&#8217;s Day in Poland, visit Jasia&#8217;s blog entry on <a title=\"Grave Tending: A National Holiday\" href=\"http:\/\/creativegene.blogspot.com\/2006\/10\/grave-tending-national-holiday.html\">Grave Tending: A National Holiday<\/a> .\u00a0 When you visit Jasia&#8217;s blog, be sure to click on the links <em>Old Cemetery in Tarnow<\/em> and <em>Old Cemetery in Tarnow at night<\/em> for some wonderful Polish cemetery photos .\u00a0 When you read Jasia&#8217;s blog entry, you&#8217;ll understand why the women were sweeping the leaves off the graves in Dubiecko, and you&#8217;ll understand the significance of the candles you can see in the photos I&#8217;ve posted here.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I was in Poland in October 2000, I visited the Catholic Cemetery there .\u00a0 I thought I might look for the surnames of my relatives there, but I had heard that most graves in Poland are rented, not purchased, &hellip;
