The city of Warsaw is home to a large number of monuments to famous Poles. A quick walk along Krakowskie Przedmie\u015bcie allows the visitor to view monuments to Adam Mickiewicz, Boles\u0142aw Prus, and Stefan Cardinal Wyszy\u0144ski, among others.<\/p>\n

Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) is regarded as Poland’s greatest romanic poet. His longest poem and his masterpiece was entitled\u00c2\u00a0Pan Tadeusz<\/em>. He referred to Lithuania as his ‘fatherland’ and is considered\u00c2\u00a0there to be a Lithuanian himself.<\/p>\n

Boles\u0142aw Prus, the pen name of Aleksander G\u0142owacki (1847-1912), is one of Poland’s most noted novelists. His best known works include The Doll<\/span> and Pharaoh<\/span>. He took his pen name ‘Prus’ from the name of his family’s coat of arms.<\/p>\n

Stefan Cardinal Wyszy\u0144ski (1901-1981) was the Primate of Poland. During communist times, Cardinal Wyszy\u0144ski negotiated with the communist authorities to allow the Roman Catholic Church to function in Poland. In addition, Cardinal Wyszy\u0144ski helped establish separation of church and state.<\/p>\n
