{"id":609,"date":"2006-09-28T22:36:38","date_gmt":"2006-09-29T05:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/09\/28\/the-marriage-of-constantine-niedzialkowski-helena-chmielewska\/"},"modified":"2016-05-22T20:04:10","modified_gmt":"2016-05-23T03:04:10","slug":"the-marriage-of-constantine-niedzialkowski-helena-chmielewska","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/609","title":{"rendered":"The Marriage of Constantine Niedzialkowski &amp; Helena Chmielewska"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My grandparents, Helena Chmielewska and\u00c2\u00a0Kostanty Niedzialkowski, were\u00c2\u00a0called &#8220;Ma and Pa&#8221; by their descendants .\u00a0 The proper Polish spelling of Pa&#8217;s name was Konstanty Niedzia\u0142kowski, but for most of his life he spelled his name Kostanty Niedzialkowski .\u00a0 For his marriage record, he used the English equivalent of his first name: Constantine.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"The Marriage Certificate of Constantine Niedzialkowski and Helena Chmielewska\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/09\/VRM-Niedzialkowski-Constant.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image607\" style=\"width: 466px; height: 423px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/09\/VRM-Niedzialkowski-Constant.jpg\" alt=\"The Marriage Certificate of Constantine Niedzialkowski and Helena Chmielewska\" width=\"466\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Marriage Certificate\u00c2\u00a0for Kostanty\u00c2\u00a0Niedzialkowski and Helen Chmielewska &#8211; 1918<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Click on the link for a PDF copy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/09\/VRM-Niedzialkowski-Kostanty-and-Chmielewski-Helen-1918.pdf\">Marriage Certificate for Kostanty Niedzialkowski and Helen Chmielewska &#8211; 1918<\/a> .\u00a0 This record states that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Constantine Niedzialkowski, age 25, residing in Worcester, Massachusetts married Helena Chmielewska, age 22, also residing in Worcester, Massachusetts on July 10, 1918 in Worcester, Massachusetts<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Both Constantine and Helena were white, they were both born in Poland, and they were both single at the time of this, the first marriage for each of them<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Constantine was a machinist and Helena was a mill operative<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Constantine&#8217;s parents were Theophil Niedzialkowski and Xaveria Zygmuntowicz<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Helena&#8217;s parents were Vincent Chmielewski and Anastasia Wolnowska<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">The intention of marriage was entered by W Henry Towne, City or Town Clerk or Registrar, in the records of the city of Worcester on June 26, 1918 and the marriage certificate was issued on July 1, 1918<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">The couple was married by B A Bojanowski, a priest residing at 15 Richland Street in Worcester who certified that he joined Constantine and Helena in marriage in Worcester on July 10, 1918<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">The certificate was received by the city or town clerk on August 10, 1918<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">This marriage was registered no. 870, intention no. 793<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">The Certificate of Marriage doesn&#8217;t list the village in Poland where either Constantine or Helena was born, but at least it provides the names of their parents.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">They were married by Father Boles\u0142aw A. Bojanowski, who was the fourth pastor of Our Lady of Cz\u0119stochowa Church in Worcester, suggesting that Constantine and Helena were married in that church .\u00a0 The 1920 US Federal Census enumerates them living in a rented apartment at 42 Perry Street in Worcester, in an area served by Our Lady of Cz\u0119stochowa Church and home to Worcester&#8217;s thriving Polish community .\u00a0 This area was on the east side of Worcester and was called &#8220;The Island&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The proper Polish spellings of the names on this document are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Constantine Niedzialkowski = Konstanty Niedzia\u0142kowski<\/li>\n<li>Helena Chmielewska = Helena Chmielewska<\/li>\n<li>Theophil Niedzialkowski = Teofil Niedzia\u0142kowski<\/li>\n<li>Xaveria Zygmuntowicz = Ksaweria Zygmuntowicz<\/li>\n<li>Vincent Chmielewski = Wincenty Chmielewski<\/li>\n<li>Anastasia Wolnowska = Anastazja Wojnowska<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As mentioned in previous articles, Constantine was the nephew of Frank Niedzialkosky\u00c2\u00a0 This means that\u00c2\u00a0Constantine&#8217;s father Theophil was Frank&#8217;s brother, and Theophil&#8217;s parents were Wojciech Niedzia\u0142kowski and Julianna Gutowska.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow:\u00a0 Not everything on an official document\u00c2\u00a0is necessarily correct &#8211; or is it?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
