When\u00c2\u00a0I originally\u00c2\u00a0translated the\u00c2\u00a0baptismal records for Stanis\u0142aw and Antoni Markiewicz, I transliterated\u00c2\u00a0the mother’s\u00c2\u00a0surname as Piontkowa .\u00a0 However, the\u00c2\u00a0names in these documents should\u00c2\u00a0be translated into the same sounds<\/em> in Polish, not necessarily the same letters<\/em> .\u00a0 The correct Polish translation of Franciszka’s surname is Pi\u0105tkowa, and Pi\u0105tkowa is the feminine version of the surname Pi\u0105tek.<\/p>\n

I received an email from Walter, a descendant of Tomasz Markiewicz and Franciszka Pi\u0105tkowa .\u00a0 Walter told me that his great-grandmother’s surname was Piatek, which\u00c2\u00a0is the English language version of Pi\u0105tek .\u00a0 (All of this is probably confusing if you can’t see Eastern European characters on your computer, but the Polish spelling of Franciszka’s surname includes an “a-ogonek”, that\u00c2\u00a0is, an “a” with a little hook underneath.)\u00c2\u00a0 Thus, I’m fairly certain that I’m on the right track here.<\/p>\n

So, with the added confidence provided by Walter’s email, I stopped off at the Family History Center (FHC)\u00c2\u00a0in San Bruno today after work to look through more of the\u00c2\u00a0church records\u00c2\u00a0from Piotrawin parish where Stanis\u0142aw and Antoni were baptized.<\/p>\n

In the Piotrawin baptismal records, I found what appear to be several children of Tomasz Markiewicz and Franciszka Pi\u0105tkowa:<\/p>\n
