{"id":525,"date":"2006-08-27T22:13:34","date_gmt":"2006-08-28T05:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/27\/stefania-chmielewska-arrives-at-ellis-island\/"},"modified":"2016-05-22T18:59:56","modified_gmt":"2016-05-23T01:59:56","slug":"stefania-chmielewska-arrives-at-ellis-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/525","title":{"rendered":"Stefania Chmielewska Arrives at Ellis Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In her Naturalization Papers, Great Aunt Stephania couldn&#8217;t remember the ship on which she emigrated to the United States, although she stated that she arrived at New York from Bremen on September 16, 1901 .\u00a0 Two ships did arrive at New York from Bremen on September 16, 1901:\u00a0 the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse and the SS Friedrich der Grosse .\u00a0 Stefania wasn&#8217;t aboard either of these ships.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<p align=\"center\"><em>The SS Barbarossa<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today, I received a message from Drew Smith (one of\u00c2\u00a0the <a title=\"Genealogy Guys\" href=\"http:\/\/www.genealogyguys.com\/\">Genealogy Guys<\/a>) who told me that he found Stefania&#8217;s Passenger Manifest on the <a title=\"Ellis Island\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ellisislandrecords.org\/\">Ellis Island<\/a> site, and indeed he had!\u00c2\u00a0 Stefania arrived on the SS Barbarossa on May 22, 1901 (a few months earlier than she reported in her naturalization papers)!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19187\" style=\"width: 662px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/PHO-SS-Barbarossa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19187\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19187\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/PHO-SS-Barbarossa.jpg\" alt=\"S. Barbarossa, leaving Bremen on May 11, 1901 and arriving at New York<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Although this page does not state the date of her arrival, other pages in the manifest show that the ship arrived in New York on May 22, 1901<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Stefania is listed on page 255, line 9 of the manifest<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She was a 14 year old single female with no occupation who could read and write<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Her nationality was Russian, her last residence was Likiszki, and she would be landing at New York<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Her final destination was Worcester, Mass., she had a ticket to her final destination, and her passage was paid by her brother<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She had $7 with her, she had never been in the United States before, and she was planning to join her brother, Josef<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She had never been in prison, almshouse, or supported by charity<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She was not a polygamist and she was not under contract to work in the United States<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Her mental and physical health were good, and she was not disabled or cripple<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">The Ellis Island indexes have Stefania listed as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Name:\u00a0 Stefnie [the manifest actually says <em>Stefania<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>Last Name:\u00a0 Chmielewska<\/li>\n<li>Ethnicity:\u00a0 Russia<\/li>\n<li>Last Place of Residence:\u00a0 Likiizki [the manifest actually says <em>Likiszki<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>Date of Arrival:\u00a0 May 11, 1901 [the actual date of arrival, as indicated on another page of the manifest,\u00a0was <em>May 22, 1901<\/em>]<\/li>\n<li>Age at Arrival:\u00a0 14y<\/li>\n<li>Gender:\u00a0 F<\/li>\n<li>Marital Status:\u00a0 S<\/li>\n<li>Ship of Travel:\u00a0 Barbarossa<\/li>\n<li>Port of Departure:\u00a0 Bremen<\/li>\n<li>Manifest Line Number:\u00a0 0009<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Ellis Island index\u00c2\u00a0contains three transcription errors .\u00a0 I&#8217;ll write to them and ask them to correct these errors .\u00a0 The folks at Ellis Island are happy to correct transcription errors, but they won&#8217;t change misspellings or errors\u00c2\u00a0in the manifests, themselves.<\/p>\n<p>But, notice the checkmark in the first column of the manifest, in front of Stefania&#8217;s name .\u00a0 This doesn&#8217;t look good for Stefania, because this check mark means that Stefania was detained at Ellis Island.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow:\u00a0 What happened to Stefania when she was detained<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
