{"id":513,"date":"2006-08-24T23:03:29","date_gmt":"2006-08-25T06:03:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/24\/513\/"},"modified":"2016-05-22T16:55:08","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T23:55:08","slug":"513","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/513","title":{"rendered":"Stefania Chmielewska&#8217;s Declaration of Intention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After I found the Naturalization Index Card for my Great Aunt Stephania, I looked up her Declaration of Intention on a microfilm that contained images of the Original of the three copies of the Declaration that were prepared .\u00a0 The Original was retained by the clerk, the Duplicate was forwarded to the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization, and the Triplicate was provided to the applicant.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19140\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/IMD-Chmielewska-Stefania-1940-Original.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19140\" class=\" wp-image-19140\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/IMD-Chmielewska-Stefania-1940-Original.jpg\" alt=\"Original Declaration of Intention for Stefania Chmielewska - 1940\" width=\"500\" height=\"756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/IMD-Chmielewska-Stefania-1940-Original.jpg 1017w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/IMD-Chmielewska-Stefania-1940-Original-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/IMD-Chmielewska-Stefania-1940-Original-768x1160.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/IMD-Chmielewska-Stefania-1940-Original-678x1024.jpg 678w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-19140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Original Declaration of Intention for Stefania Chmielewska &#8211; 1940<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Click on the link for a PDF copy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/IMD-Chmielewska-Stefania-1940-Original.pdf\">Original Declaration of Intent for Stefania Chmielewska &#8211; 1940<\/a> .\u00a0 According to the definitions of Original Source\u00c2\u00a0and Derivative Source, this document is an Exact Image of an Original Source.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The Declaration states that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Stefania Chmielewska made her Declaration of Intention No. 52410 to become a citizen of the United States in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, County of Worcester, in the Superior Court of Massachusetts of Worcester<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She resided at 15 Charlton St., Worcester, Worcester, Mass.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Her occupation was a rooming house keeper<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She was 54 years old, female, white, medium complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, 5 feet 2 inches tall, 120 pounds, with no distinctive marks<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She was of Polish race and\u00c2\u00a0of Polish nationality<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She was born in Likiszki, Poland on Jan. 7, 1886<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She was not married, had no children, and had not previously made a Declaration of Intention<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Her last foreign residence was Likiszki, Poland<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She emigrated from Bremen, German and entered the United States at New York, N.Y. under the name of Stefania Chmielewska on Sept. 16, 1901, but did not know the name of the ship on which she had traveled<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">She submitted her Declaration at Worcester, Mass. on November 25, 1940<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Her Certificate of Arrival was No. 1x 81667<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">The Declaration was signed by William C. Bowen, Clerk of the Superior Court<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">The Declaration shows that Stefania&#8217;s surname was corrected from Chmielewski to Chmielewska .\u00a0 The Certificate of Arrival number was also corrected:\u00a0 the space for the number shows xxxxxx and the actual number is typed to the left of the clerk&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">As fate would have it, not only did Stefania forget the name of the ship on which\u00c2\u00a0she sailed, but she reported the wrong date of arrival.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I&#8217;m not sure where Stefania&#8217;s birthplace of Likiszki is, but two choices are likely:\u00a0the village Likishki Vel&#8217;ke [Liki\u00c5\u00a1kiai], Alytaus, Lithuania and the village of Lilishki [Liuli\u00c5\u00a1kiai], Vilniaus, Lithuania.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
