{"id":482,"date":"2006-08-09T22:27:56","date_gmt":"2006-08-10T05:27:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/09\/more-photos-from-verdun\/"},"modified":"2016-05-18T15:10:52","modified_gmt":"2016-05-18T22:10:52","slug":"more-photos-from-verdun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/482","title":{"rendered":"More Photos from Verdun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few days ago I <a title=\"posted some photographs\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/06\/a-visit-to-verdun-france\/\">posted some photographs<\/a> that Lewis Michaels shot while in <a title=\"Verdun\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verdun\">Verdun<\/a>, the site of one of the costliest battles of World War I .\u00a0 Today, I&#8217;m posting some of my own photos from Verdun .\u00a0 A <a title=\"map of the area\" href=\"http:\/\/www.webmatters.net\/maps\/ww1_map_verdun_btl.htm\">map of the area<\/a> shows the locations of Douaumont and Fleury.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00c2\u00a0<a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Verdun Memorial\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Verdun_Memorial.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image480\" style=\"width: 463px; height: 329px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Verdun_Memorial.jpg\" alt=\"Verdun Memorial\" width=\"463\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>The Verdun Memorial<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The <a title=\"Verdun Menorial\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verdun_Memorial\">Verdun Memorial<\/a> is a museum that depicts the devastation that was wrought on the area during the battle at Verdun .\u00a0 The museum includes artifacts from World War I, dioramas depicting the battle, and audio-video presentations about the War.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Verdun Bunkers\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Verdun_Bunkers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image478\" style=\"width: 453px; height: 327px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Verdun_Bunkers.jpg\" alt=\"Verdun Bunkers\" width=\"453\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Observation Posts\u00c2\u00a0and the French Flag<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Lewis and I both took several photos of the observation posts\u00c2\u00a0at Verdun .\u00a0 This area moved from French control to German control and back again several times during the battle .\u00a0 Today, the French flag provides a stirring reminder of how much this battle cost the French defenders.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"National Cemetery\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Verdun_Crosses.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image479\" style=\"width: 453px; height: 324px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Verdun_Crosses.jpg\" alt=\"National Cemetery\" width=\"453\" height=\"324\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>The\u00c2\u00a0French\u00c2\u00a0National\u00c2\u00a0Cemetery<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In front of the Douaumont Ossuary is the French National Cemetery .\u00a0 Some 15,000 French soldiers are buried here in graves marked by a white cross with a nameplate and a rose planted in front of the cross .\u00a0 Muslim soldiers are buried under a gravestone facing towards Mecca.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Fleury\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Verdun_Village.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image481\" style=\"width: 453px; height: 327px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Verdun_Village.jpg\" alt=\"Fleury\" width=\"453\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>The Village of Fleury-devant-Douaumont<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The village of <a title=\"Fleury\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fleury-devant-Douaumont\">Fleury<\/a> is one of nine villages that were never rebuilt after the war .\u00a0 The ground is still full of ammunition and metal and the landscape remains cratered to this day from the intensive bombardment of the area .\u00a0 A small chapel has been built on the site and the location of streets, homes, and shops are marked with signs as a memorial to this once thriving village.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The battle of Verdun was a war of attrition:\u00a0 German General Erich von Falkenhayn intended to &#8220;bleed France white&#8221; in order to weaken their resistance .\u00a0 In the end, both the French and\u00c2\u00a0German armies were\u00c2\u00a0decimated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\">Copyright \u00a9 2016 by Stephen J.
