{"id":470,"date":"2006-08-08T23:05:45","date_gmt":"2006-08-09T06:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/08\/john-jwanauskis-passenger-manifest\/"},"modified":"2016-05-22T16:32:53","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T23:32:53","slug":"john-jwanauskis-passenger-manifest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/470","title":{"rendered":"John Jwanauski&#8217;s Passenger Manifest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had previously searched\u00c2\u00a0for John Jwanauski&#8217;s passenger manifest\u00c2\u00a0at the Ellis Island Records site and at Stephen Morse&#8217;s site without success .\u00a0 I also couldn&#8217;t find\u00c2\u00a0his name\u00c2\u00a0by scrolling through all the pages of the manifest one-by-one .\u00a0 Finally, I searched the Record of Aliens Held for Special Inquiry and the Record of Detained Aliens which followed the passenger manifests .\u00a0 There, in the <a title=\"Record of Detained Aliens\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/07\/john-jwanauski-detained-at-ellis-island\/\">Record of Detained Aliens<\/a>, I found a Jonas Iwanauskis .\u00a0 Why couldn&#8217;t I find the record when I searched every page of the manifest?<\/p>\n<p>The Record of Detained Aliens states that Jonas Iwanauskis was on the manifest as a member of group 3, Number 24 .\u00a0 This means that Jonas Iwanauskis is on\u00c2\u00a0list 3, line 24\u00c2\u00a0of the manifests for alien passengers .\u00a0 I started at the beginning of the manifest and scrolled past the lists of US Citizens and the lists of Second-Cabin Aliens to reach the lists of Alien Passengers in Steerage .\u00a0 There, on\u00c2\u00a0list 3, line 24, was Jonas .\u00a0 Apparently, the reason I didn&#8217;t recognize the name the first time is that I was looking for John Jwanauski .\u00a0 The name on the manifest appears to be Jonas Franauskis, since the &#8220;Jw&#8221; at the start of the name looks a lot like &#8220;Fr&#8221; .\u00a0 But, that&#8217;s OK, I&#8217;ve found the manifest now.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Jwanauskis manifest page 1\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Manifest-Iwanauskis-J-P1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image471\" style=\"width: 454px; height: 429px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Manifest-Iwanauskis-J-P1.jpg\" alt=\"Jwanauskis manifest page 1\" width=\"454\" height=\"429\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Page 1 of the Passenger Manifest for Jonas Jwanauskis &#8211; 1912<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00c2\u00a0<em>\u00c2\u00a0<a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Jwanauskis Page 2\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Manifest-Iwanauskis-J-Page2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image477\" style=\"width: 461px; height: 438px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Manifest-Iwanauskis-J-Page2.jpg\" alt=\"Jwanauskis Page 2\" width=\"461\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Page 2 of the Passenger Manifest for Jonas Jwanauskis &#8211; 1912<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Click on the link for a PDF copies of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/IMM-Iwanauskis-Jonas-1912.pdf\">Passenger Manifest for Jonas Jwanauskis 1912<\/a> .\u00a0 The manifest states that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Jonas Jwanauskis\u00c2\u00a0departed from Bremen on December 3, 1912\u00c2\u00a0on the S.S. Grosser Kurfurst and arrived in New York on December 15, 1912<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Jonas is listed on List 3 of the alien passengers in steerage, line 24<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Jonas was a single male, 17 years old<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">His occupation was farm lab [farm laborer]<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Jonas could read and write<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">He was a Lithuanian of Russian nationality and his last permanent residence was Poporcie, Russia<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">The nearest relative in the country he left was his mother [?] Jwanauskis in Poporcie, Kovno<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">His destination was Scitico, Conn.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">It&#8217;s not clear whether or not he held a ticket to his final destination<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">His passage was paid by his brother-in-law and he had no cash<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">He had not previously been in the United States<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">He was planning to join his brother-in-law, Paul [Dovoicis], Box 16, Scitico, Conn.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">His health was good and he was not a cripple<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">He was 5 feet, 1 inch tall, with fair complexion, blond hair, and blue eyes<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">He had no marks of identification<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">He was born in Poporcie<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">My best guess at\u00c2\u00a0Jonas&#8217; place of birth and residence is\u00c2\u00a0Poporcie, Russia, now known as Paparciai, Kauno, Lithuania .\u00a0 This village is not far from Kovno, Russia, now known as Kaunas, Kauno, Lithuania.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Jonas stated that he was traveling to Scitico, Connecticut, which is not far from Springfield, Massachusetts .\u00a0 Springfield was his destination when he was <a title=\"discharged\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/05\/the-honorable-discharge-of-john-jwanauski\/\">discharged<\/a> from the U.S. Army at the end of World War I .\u00a0 The Record of Detained Aliens, however, stated that Jonas&#8217; brother-in-law lived in Harrisville, Connecticut, not Scitico.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The fact that Jonas had no cash with him explains why he was detained .\u00a0 He had to wait at Ellis Island until his brother-in-law sent money so he could finish his journey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
