{"id":447,"date":"2006-08-02T23:13:48","date_gmt":"2006-08-03T06:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/08\/02\/a-visit-to-the-family-history-center\/"},"modified":"2006-08-02T23:13:48","modified_gmt":"2006-08-03T06:13:48","slug":"a-visit-to-the-family-history-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/447","title":{"rendered":"A Visit to the Family History Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m currently taking an online\u00c2\u00a0course from the University of Toronto &#8211; The National Institute\u00c2\u00a0for Genealogical Studies entitled <em>Research at Family History Centers<\/em> .\u00a0 Even though I&#8217;ve been to the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City many times, I&#8217;ve never been to a local Family History Center (FHC).<\/p>\n<p>As part of one of the assignments, today I stopped in at the Family History Center in San Bruno, California .\u00a0 The FHC in San Francisco is actually closer to my house, but the FHC is on my way home from work .\u00a0 I decided that my goals were to find out how the center operates and to order a couple of films.<\/p>\n<p>After I arrived\u00c2\u00a0at the FHC, I thought I would examine the Passenger Records on Ancestry.com, since I don&#8217;t have access to these records through my own subscription at home .\u00a0 I searched for Sarwetnik, hoping to find a passenger arrival\u00c2\u00a0record for Joseph Sarwetnik&#8217;s family in a port other than Ellis Island .\u00a0 I was not successful.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"S.S. Volendam\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/SS-Volendam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image444\" style=\"height: 231px\" height=\"231\" alt=\"S.S. Volendam\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/SS-Volendam.jpg\" width=\"452\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>The S.S. Volendam<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unexpectedly, when I searched for Jan Savitt, I found a passenger record for Jan on the S.S. Volendam, sailing on a West Indies Cruse round trip from New York, from August 27, 1938 to September 8, 1938 .\u00a0 I imagine Jan was providing the entertainment for the cruise.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Jan Savitt Manifest 1938\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Jan-Savitt-Manifest-1938.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image445\" style=\"width: 452px; height: 452px\" height=\"452\" alt=\"Jan Savitt Manifest 1938\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/08\/Jan-Savitt-Manifest-1938.jpg\" width=\"452\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Passenger Manifest for Jan Savitt on the S.S.
