{"id":428,"date":"2006-07-28T23:34:48","date_gmt":"2006-07-29T06:34:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/07\/28\/stanley-markiewicz-in-the-1930-census\/"},"modified":"2016-05-22T15:40:08","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T22:40:08","slug":"stanley-markiewicz-in-the-1930-census","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/428","title":{"rendered":"Stanley Markiewicz in the 1930 Census"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1930, Stanislaw Markiewicz was still living in Worcester, Massachusetts, but by this time was using the name Stanley Markiewicz .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0In addition, all his children were\u00c2\u00a0listed with\u00c2\u00a0Anglicized names, as opposed to the Polish names used in the 1920 Census.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"1930 Census Markiewicz\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/Census-1930-Markiewicz.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image426\" style=\"width: 452px; height: 374px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/Census-1930-Markiewicz.jpg\" alt=\"1930 Census Markiewicz\" width=\"452\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>1930 US Federal Census Record for Stanley Markiewicz<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Click on the link for a PDF copy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/CUS-Markiewicz-Stanislaw-1930.pdf\">US Federal Census Record for Stanley Markiewicz &#8211; 1930<\/a> .\u00a0 The record provides information that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">In 1930, Stanley Markiewicz was a married white male,\u00a039 years old,\u00a0who owned a home worth $8400 on 19 Perry Avenue\u00c2\u00a0in\u00c2\u00a0Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Stanley (and his parents) were born in Poland; he immigrated in 1912 and had filed his Declaration of Intention to become a citizen<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Stanislaw could read and write,\u00a0and by 1930 he could speak\u00c2\u00a0English<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Stanislaw listed his occupation as a laborer in a loom works, but was not working at the time of the census; he was listed on line 12 [?] of the Unemployment Schedule and was not a veteran<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Stanislaw&#8217;s wife was Antonette, a married white female, 38 years old<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Antonette (and her parents) were born in Poland; she was an alien who immigrated in 1912<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Antonette could not read and write,\u00a0and she couldn&#8217;t speak English<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">The couple was married when\u00c2\u00a0Stanley was 21 and Antonette was 20<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">The couple&#8217;s children were Stephen age 16, Bessie age 14, Wesley age 12, Edward age 10, Helen age 8, and Jane age 4 and 9\/12, all born in Massachusetts<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Bessie, Wesley, Edward, and Helen were in school<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div align=\"left\">Stephen, Bessie, Wesley, and Edward could read and write and could speak English<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"left\">As a side note, in the\u00c2\u00a0first half of the 20th Century, the neighborhood where the Markiewicz family was living in 1930 was predominantly\u00c2\u00a0a neighborhood of Polish immigrants .\u00a0 In 1910, my own grandparents, Kostanty and Helen Niedzialkowski, lived at 42 Perry Avenue, about a block away from where the Markiewicz family lived in 1930 .\u00a0 My grandparents may have known the Markiewicz family at the time .\u00a0 In all likelihood, the two families\u00c2\u00a0both attended the nearby Church of Our Lady of Cz\u0119stochowa.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Stanley reported his occupation as laborer in a loom works, although he was unemployed at the time of the census .\u00a0 In the early part of the 20th century, The Crompton and Knowles Loom Works, located on Grand Street, employed a large number of Polish immigrants and may have been Stanley&#8217;s employer at one time.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Tomorrow:\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0More about the family&#8217;s ancestral village of Braciejowice<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"left\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
