{"id":422,"date":"2006-07-26T23:54:22","date_gmt":"2006-07-27T06:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/07\/26\/braciejwice-the-ancestral-village-of-stanislaw-markiewicz\/"},"modified":"2020-10-04T16:12:49","modified_gmt":"2020-10-04T23:12:49","slug":"braciejwice-the-ancestral-village-of-stanislaw-markiewicz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/422","title":{"rendered":"Braciejowice &#8211; The Ancestral Village of Stanis\u0142aw Markiewicz"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On his Passenger Manifest and in his Petition for Naturalization, Stanis\u0142aw Markiewicz named the village of Braciejowice as his birthplace.&nbsp; When he lived there, Braciejowice was in Russia, near Lublin.&nbsp; The proximity to Lublin may explain why he called Lublin his birthplace on his Declaration of Intention.&nbsp; Today, Braciejowice is in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>S\u0142ownik Geograficzny Kr\u00f3lestwa Polskiego i Innych Kraj\u00f3w S\u0142owa\u0144skich<\/em> (The Geographical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and Other Slavonic Countries) is a monumental 16 volume&nbsp;gazetteer published in Warsaw under the direction of Filip Sulimierski in the years 1880-1902. The <em>S\u0142ownik<\/em> provides descriptions of nearly every city, town, and village in Poland and the surrounding areas, and was written at about the time the ancestors of many Polish-American citizens still lived in the old country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>S\u0142ownik<\/em> entry for the village of Braciejowice states:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Braciejowice,<\/strong> a village and grange [large manorial farmstead], Nowo Aleksandryja Powiat [District], Kamie\u0144 gmina [municipality], Piotrowin parish.&nbsp; It lies in a clump created by two arms of the Vistula River, it borders on Jarnu\u0142towice and Zakrz\u00f3w (D\u0142ugosz [<em>Liber Beneficiorum<\/em>] III 240); it constituted the property of the Benedictine Monks of \u0141ysog\u00f3rski, it was already mentioned in the privilege from the year 1270.&nbsp; In 1827 there were 54 homes and 379 inhabitants here; currently it constitutes primogeniture.<\/p><p><em>Bronis<span lang=\"PL\">\u0142<\/span>aw Chlebowski<\/em><\/p><p>Source:&nbsp; Sulmierski, Filip, Bronis\u0142aw Chlebowski and Wladys\u0142aw Walewski, <em>eds., S\u0142ownik Geograficzny Kr\u00f3lestwa Polskiego i Innych Kraj\u00f3w S\u0142owia\u0144skich<\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"> (<em>Geographical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and other Slavonic Countries<\/em>), Warsaw 1880, Volume I\u00c2\u00ad, page 345.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Besides this entry, there is another entry for Braciejowice in Volume XV (Volume XV provides descriptions of villages missed in the main work, additional information, and corrections to the first 14 volumes).<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p style=\"margin: 6pt 0in;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Braciejowice <\/span><\/strong>1), a village on the Vistula River, Nowo Aleksandryja Powiat [District] (now Pu\u0142awy Powiat), has 654 inhabitants.&nbsp; According to documents, in the year 1270 and 1374 it was the property of the \u0141ysog\u00f3rski Monastery. In the year 1569 it belonged to the parish in Solec. Andrzej Klonowski Kurek paid for 1 field, 2 farmsteads, and 2 tenant farmers.<\/p><p>2) Braciejowice, a forest settlement, Cz\u0119stochowa Powiat, Popi gmina [municipality], it has 1 home, 4 inhabitants, and an 800 m\u00f3rg manor. It went into the storehouse of the primogeniture grant of the line of Father Czerkaski.<\/p><p>Source: Chlebowski, Bronis\u0142aw, J\u00f3zefa Krzywicki, Filip Sulimierski, and W\u0142adys\u0142aw Walewski, eds.,<em> S\u0142ownik Geograficzny Kr\u00f3lestwa Polskiego i Innych Kraj\u00f3w S\u0142owia\u0144skich<\/em> (Geographical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and other Slavonic Countries), Warsaw 1900, Volume XV\u00c2\u00ad, page 226.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The entry from Volume 1 is for a village near Lublin, so this is probably the correct ancestral village for Stanis\u0142aw Markiewicz.&nbsp; Of the two entries in Volume 15, the first elaborates on the information on the same village described in Volume 1.&nbsp; The second entry is for a village of the same name near Cz\u0119stochowa &#8211; far from Lublin and not likely to be the correct village since it consists of only one home and four inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the <em>S\u0142ownik<\/em> entries don&#8217;t provide a whole lot of&nbsp;detail about Braciejowice, they do provide one very important piece of information &#8211; the location of the parish church.&nbsp; According to Volume I, the parish church was located in Piotrowin.&nbsp; The entry in Volume XV says that in 1569 the parish church was in Solec, but this time period is well before the time Stanis\u0142aw lived there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A search on <a href=\"https:\/\/mapa.szukacz.pl\/mapnik.html\">mapa.Szukacz.pl<\/a>&nbsp;shows the location of the village.&nbsp; A search for the parish village of Piotrowin shows that Piotrowin is over 60 miles from Braciejowice.&nbsp; This village can&#8217;t be the correct parish church.&nbsp; Solec is close to Braciejowice, but Piotrowin is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lidia M\u00ed\u00bcllerowa&#8217;s book <em>Roman Catholic Parishes in the Polish People&#8217;s Republic in 1984<\/em> (Polish Genealogical Society of America, Chicago, 1995) shows a parish in the village of Piotrawin (note the spelling difference &#8211; Piotrowin &#8211; Piotrawin).&nbsp; Piotrawin is within about 5 miles of Braciejowice.&nbsp; Was there a spelling error in the <em>S\u0142ownik<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A check of the S\u0142ownik entry for Piotrawin provides a lengthy description of this village.&nbsp; The passage begins:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Piotrawin,<\/strong> erroneously <em>Piotrowin<\/em>, in D\u0142ugosz <em>Pyotrawin<\/em>, a village and grange [large manorial farmstead] on the Vistula River, Nowo Aleksandryja Powiat [District] (Pulawy), Kamie\u0144 gmina [municipality], Piotrawin parish&#8230;.<\/p><p>Source: Chlebowski, Bronis\u0142aw,&nbsp;W\u0142adys\u0142aw Walewski, and Filip Sulimierski, eds.,<em> S\u0142ownik Geograficzny Kr\u00f3lestwa Polskiego i Innych Kraj\u00f3w S\u0142owia\u0144skich<\/em> (Geographical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and other Slavonic Countries), Warsaw 1887, Volume VIII\u00c2\u00ad, pages 185-186.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the parish for Braciejowice is in Piotrawin.&nbsp; The next question is &#8211; does the Family History Library have the parish records for Piotrawin in their collection?&nbsp; The answer is yes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Family History Library has microfilmed records for the parish of Piotrawin&nbsp;including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Acta urodze\u0144 (Birth Records) &#8211; 1810-1833, 1836-1845, 1850-1914<\/li><li>Acta ma\u0142\u017censtw (Marriage Records) &#8211; 1810-1913<\/li><li>Acta zygon\u00f3w (Death Records) &#8211; 1810-1833, 1836-1845, 1849-1909<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is excellent!&nbsp; While there are some gaps in the records, the time period when Stanis\u0142aw was born, when his parents were married, and when his parents were born seems to be covered.&nbsp; There is even a chance that Stanis\u0142aw&#8217;s ancestry can be traced back to 1810.&nbsp; There is also a chance that Stanis\u0142aw&#8217;s family is not represented in these records at all, but this is an excellent lead to finding more about the ancestry of Stanis\u0142aw Markiewicz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can order these microfilms through my local Family History Center in San Bruno, California, or I can just wait until my next trip to Salt Lake City.&nbsp; In the meantime, there are some additional records on the Markiewicz family that can be obtained online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tomorrow:\u00a0 the Markiewicz family in the Census<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Copyright \u00a9 2006-2020 by Stephen J.
