Zeeland and arrived in New York City on March 7, 1905 .\u00a0 The passenger manifest (click on the thumbnail below to see the entire manifest) asked in Column 16 &#8220;Whether going to join a relative or friend; and if so, what relative or friend, and his name and complete address&#8221; .\u00a0 My grandfather is listed on Line 17, and his response to the question in Column 16 is practically unreadable .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Patricia, a\u00c2\u00a0friend and classmate of mine, helped me figure out with whom my grandfather was staying.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5515\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/Michal-Danko-Passenger-Manifest.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5515\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5515  \" title=\"Micha\u0142 Da\u0144ko Passenger Manifest\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/Michal-Danko-Passenger-Manifest-1024x855.gif\" alt=\"Micha\u0142 Da\u0144ko Passenger Manifest\" width=\"368\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Micha\u0142 Da\u0144ko Passenger Manifest<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Patricia examined the manifest and thought that she could read the name &#8220;Flichtenfeld&#8221; and so she started to search the 1900 census records for someone in New York City with that surname .\u00a0 She found an Isaac Flichtenfeld living in New York City with his wife Esther .\u00a0 I took a look at the census records for Isaac and found him in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records .\u00a0 The 1910 census record is provided in the thumbnail below.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5518\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/CUS-1910-Flichtenfeld-Isaac.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5518\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5518    \" title=\"1910 US Census Record for Isaac Flichtenfeld\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/CUS-1910-Flichtenfeld-Isaac-1024x822.jpg\" alt=\"1910 US Census Record for Isaac Flichtenfeld\" width=\"368\" height=\"296\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1910 US Census Record for Isaac Flichtenfeld<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Isaac Flichtenfeld was enumerated on line 43 of the census record .\u00a0 He is listed with his wife Esther, five children, and a servant .\u00a0 Based on the information in this census, other census records, and the World War I draft registration card for Isaac&#8217;s son Carl, I learned that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Isaac was a Jewish immigrant from Galicia, Austria-Poland, who immigrated in 1892.<\/li>\n<li>Isaac lived at 35 First Avenue in New York City.<\/li>\n<li>Isaac was an umbrella maker.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In examining Column 16 closely, I was able to interpret the handwriting to say that my grandfather was going to stay with:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">friend, Isaac Flichtenfeld Hester 1st Ave New York<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">So exactly who was this New York umbrella maker Issac Flichtenfeld and his wife Esther (Hester)?\u00c2\u00a0 How did my Roman Catholic grandfather become good enough friends with a Jewish family in New York that he could stay with them?\u00c2\u00a0 Did they live near each other in Galicia?\u00c2\u00a0 Did they know each other in Galicia or was\u00c2\u00a0my grandfather\u00c2\u00a0simply referred to Isaac by someone else?\u00c2\u00a0 How long did my grandfather stay with Isaac and why did he later leave New York to settle in Worcester, Massachusetts?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I looked for anyone named Flichtenfeld who immigrated through Ellis Island .\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t find Isaac or his wife, but most of the Flichtenfelds I could find were from Przemys\u0142, a relatively large town not far from Nienadowa where my grandfather lived .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I also\u00c2\u00a0found one Flichtenfeld who was from Babice &#8211; a village within walking distance of Nienadowa, and a village that, along with Nienadowa,\u00a0belonged to the Dubiecko parish.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">I still don&#8217;t know how my grandfather came to stay with a Jewish\u00c2\u00a0umbrella maker in New York City when he immigrated in 1905, but this little bit of information\u00c2\u00a0adds some detail to my grandfather&#8217;s immigration story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
