{"id":364,"date":"2006-07-14T21:56:37","date_gmt":"2006-07-15T04:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/07\/14\/the-bandleaders-changing-birthdate\/"},"modified":"2016-05-22T13:16:23","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T20:16:23","slug":"the-bandleaders-changing-birthdate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/364","title":{"rendered":"The Bandleader&#8217;s Changing Birthdate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week\u00c2\u00a0I received an email message from one of Jan Savitt&#8217;s children, Devi, asking for advice on how to research Jan&#8217;s Savitt&#8217;s family history .\u00a0 We&#8217;ve exchanged a few messages this week so I could find out what was already known about the family and what Devi wanted to discover .\u00a0 Well, the problem is so interesting that I couldn&#8217;t resist conducting some research of my own .\u00a0 Sometimes I think my interest in genealogy is a curse &#8211; I can&#8217;t resist a good genealogical problem!<\/p>\n<p>Devi&#8217;s father is Jan Savitt, a famous bandleader from the 1930&#8217;s and 1940&#8217;s who died suddenly in 1948 of a cerebral hemorrage while on his way to a gig in Sacramento .\u00a0 Searching the internet for &#8220;Jan Savitt&#8221; produces lots of hits, many of which are links to CDs of his bands.<\/p>\n<p>In his book <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=un9rWzvn8lgC&amp;lpg=PA198&amp;ots=dS7OpyZ82M&amp;dq=jan%20savitt%20immigrated&amp;pg=PA198#v=onepage&amp;q=jan%20savitt%20immigrated&amp;f=false\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American Big Bands<\/span><\/a>, William F. Lee reported that Jan Savitt was born on September 4, 1913\u00c2\u00a0in\u00c2\u00a0Petrograd, Russia\u00c2\u00a0and that Jan immigrated to the United<br \/>\nStates with his family when he was 15. Some biographies, including those on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0767816\/bio\">IMDb<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/artist\/jan-savitt\/id1579864\">iTunes<\/a>, describe his father\u00c2\u00a0as a drummer\u00c2\u00a0in the Imperial Regiment Band of Tsar Nicholas II. The biographies further state that he was invited to join the <a title=\"Philadelphia Orchestra\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jan_Savitt\">Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra<\/a> when he was 15, studied at the Curtis Institute and in Europe, formed a string quartet in 1936, formed his band &#8220;The Top Hatters&#8221; in 1937, and began touring in 1938 .\u00a0 He died on <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1129&amp;dat=19481005&amp;id=1QgNAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=WmoDAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=3847,305353&amp;hl=en\">October 4, 1948<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, how much of all this is true?\u00c2\u00a0 To start, if he was born in 1913, he couldn&#8217;t have immigrated in 1914 at the age of 15 .\u00a0 To be fair, most online biographies acknowledge that Jan&#8217;s birthdate is in dispute.<\/p>\n<p>Devi provided me with some information about her father, her uncles, and her grandparents, and armed with that information, I immediately searched the census records to see if I could confirm the information in the biographies.<\/p>\n<p>In 1930, Jan was living in Philadelphia with other family members.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"1930 Census\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/1930-Joseph-Savitt.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image363\" style=\"width: 462px; height: 342px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/1930-Joseph-Savitt.jpg\" alt=\"1930 Census\" width=\"462\" height=\"342\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>1930 Census Record for Joseph Savitt and Family<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 1930 Census states that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1930, the family was living at 6221 Pine Street in Philadelphia<\/li>\n<li>The\u00c2\u00a0head of household was\u00c2\u00a0Joseph, age 60, a married white male, born in Russia, working as a motor mechanic in a motor brushes manufacturing company<\/li>\n<li>Joseph&#8217;s wife was Ida, age 51, a married white female, born in Russia, with no occupation listed<\/li>\n<li>Joseph and Ida&#8217;s son David was\u00c2\u00a0a 29 year old, single white male, born in Russia, working as a salesman in wholesale dresses<\/li>\n<li>The couple&#8217;s son William was a 26 year old, single white male, born in Russia, working as a salesman in wholesale shoes<\/li>\n<li>The couple&#8217;s son Jan is listed as Jay Savitt, a 22 year old, single white male, born in Russia, working as a musician in an orchestra<\/li>\n<li>Joseph&#8217;s nephew David was a 31 year old, single white male, born in Russia, working as a salesman in wholesale shoes<\/li>\n<li>All people\u00c2\u00a0in the household\u00c2\u00a0are listed as naturalized citizens who immigrated in 1910 and spoke Jewish before coming to the United States<\/li>\n<li>The family\u00c2\u00a0owned their home\u00c2\u00a0valued at\u00c2\u00a0$5500<\/li>\n<li>The family owned a radio<\/li>\n<li>None of the family members were veterans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From this record, in 1930 Jan was known as Jay Savitt, was born about 1908, emigrated from Russia in 1911, was Jewish, was single, and was working as a musician in an orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>Click on this link to view a PDF of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/CUS-Savitt-Joseph-1930.pdf\">US Federal Census\u00c2\u00a0Record for the Joseph Savitt Family &#8211; 1930<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow:\u00a0 What do earlier census records say about this family?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
