{"id":3539,"date":"2009-03-13T00:01:05","date_gmt":"2009-03-13T07:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2009\/03\/13\/conference-on-genetic-genealogy\/"},"modified":"2011-12-04T21:52:14","modified_gmt":"2011-12-05T05:52:14","slug":"conference-on-genetic-genealogy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/3539","title":{"rendered":"Conference on Genetic Genealogy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today I&#8217;m flying to Houston to attend the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.familytreedna.com\/\">Family Tree DNA<\/a> 5th International Conference on Genetic Genealogy for Project Administrators.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m the administrator to the Danko\u00c2\u00a0DNA Project and the Niedzialkowski\u00c2\u00a0DNA Project at Family Tree DNA .\u00a0These projects are small right now and I hope to learn some techniques to help convince more people to participate.<\/p>\n<p>The conference promises to be an exciting combination of scientific presentations and practical discussions on the use of DNA in genealogy.<\/p>\n<p>The program begins tonight with a reception hosted by Family Tree DNA. The talks begin Saturday morning and continue through Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s program begins with introductions by Max Blankfeld, Vice-President of Marketing and Operations and Family Tree DNA, followed by a presentation on Family Tree DNA in 2008 by Bennett Greenspan, the President and CEO of Family Tree DNA.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Saturday morning, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/field\/explorers\/spencer-wells.html\">Spencer Wells<\/a>, National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence and director of the Genographic Project, will discuss Deep Ancestry: Inside the Genographic Project.<\/p>\n<p>Other presentations during the weekend will discuss Privacy &amp; Ethics of DNA Testing, Advances in mtDNA, Advances in TMRCA (time to most recent common ancestor), the Current State of Y STR (short tandem repeat) Nomenclature 2009, and Updates to the Y-Chromosome Tree, among others.<\/p>\n<p>This will be an exciting conference for me, especially given my scientific background and my compassion for genealogy.<\/p>\n<p>And, if there&#8217;s anyone out there with the Niedzialkowski or Danko surnames who is interested in having their DNA analyzed for genealogical purposes, let me know.
