{"id":350,"date":"2006-07-11T14:00:42","date_gmt":"2006-07-11T21:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/07\/11\/the-brief-life-of-john-kurpiel\/"},"modified":"2016-05-07T22:48:21","modified_gmt":"2016-05-08T05:48:21","slug":"the-brief-life-of-john-kurpiel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/350","title":{"rendered":"The Brief Life of John Kurpiel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My Aunt Bronis\u0142awa was the second\u00c2\u00a0of three infants to be buried in\u00c2\u00a0an unmarked grave in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester .\u00a0 The first to be buried was John Kurpiel who died when he was only a month old .\u00a0 Like Bronis\u0142awa, he was from a Polish family and he died of broncho pneumonia .\u00a0 Finding his birth and death records was relatively easy, especially since Barb Poole looked up the volume and page numbers in the vital record indexes at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS)\u00c2\u00a0in Boston .\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have a chance to visit the NEHGS in my recent trip to Boston (although I did have dinner on Newbury Street, just a few blocks from the NEHGS on Saturday night).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRB-Kurpiel-John-1912.pdf\">Birth Record of John Kurpiel<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is shown below .\u00a0 Like Bronis\u0142awa&#8217;s birth record, John&#8217;s record is included in a ledger and was recorded in January of the year following his birth .\u00a0 In John&#8217;s case, his birth was actually recorded after his death .\u00a0 As with Bronis\u0142awa&#8217;s birth record, I cropped the ledger page just below John Kurpiel&#8217;s entry, so John&#8217;s name appears to be at the bottom of the page .\u00a0 The original page contained many more entries below John&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18824\" style=\"width: 1470px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRB-Kurpiel-John-1912.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18824\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18824\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRB-Kurpiel-John-1912.jpg\" alt=\"Birth Record of John Kurpiel - 1912\" width=\"1460\" height=\"695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRB-Kurpiel-John-1912.jpg 1460w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRB-Kurpiel-John-1912-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRB-Kurpiel-John-1912-768x366.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRB-Kurpiel-John-1912-1024x487.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1460px) 100vw, 1460px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Birth Record of John Kurpiel &#8211; 1912<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The entry states that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>John Kurpiel\u00c2\u00a0was listed as entry number\u00c2\u00a0224 in Massachusetts Births, volume 611, page 514<\/li>\n<li>He was a male child, born in the City of Worcester, Massachusetts on October 30, 1912<\/li>\n<li>His father was\u00c2\u00a0Mateus Kurpiel\u00c2\u00a0and his mother was\u00c2\u00a0Katarzyna Novak, both of\u00c2\u00a0whom resided in Worcester<\/li>\n<li>His father&#8217;s occupation was not listed<\/li>\n<li>Both\u00c2\u00a0of his\u00c2\u00a0parents were born in Austria<\/li>\n<li>His birth was registered in the City of Worcester in January 1913<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The correct Polish spelling of the names of John&#8217;s parents should be Mateusz Kurpiel and Katarzyna Nowak.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRD-Kurpiel-John-1912.pdf\">Death Record of John Kurpiel<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is recorded on the standard form, just as Bronis\u0142awa&#8217;s was.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18823\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRD-Kurpiel-John-1912.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18823\" class=\" wp-image-18823\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRD-Kurpiel-John-1912.jpg\" alt=\"Death Record of John Kurpiel - 1912\" width=\"420\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRD-Kurpiel-John-1912.jpg 785w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRD-Kurpiel-John-1912-291x300.jpg 291w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/07\/VRD-Kurpiel-John-1912-768x792.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Death Record of John Kurpiel &#8211; 1912<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Death Record states that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>John Kurpiel&#8217;s death was recorded in Massachusetts Deaths volume 111, number\u00c2\u00a0303<\/li>\n<li>He was a single, white male, born in Worcester on October 30, 1912 and was 1 month,\u00a020 days old at the\u00c2\u00a0time of death<\/li>\n<li>His father was Mateus Kurpiel who was born in Austria<\/li>\n<li>His mother was Katarzina Novak and she was born in Austria<\/li>\n<li>Peter O&#8217;Shea. M.D .\u00a0attended him from December 17, 1912 until\u00c2\u00a0December 20, 1912<\/li>\n<li>He\u00c2\u00a0died at\u00c2\u00a06 PM on January 13, 1913 at the family home at 161 Millbury in Worcester after suffering for\u00c2\u00a04 days with broncho pneumonia<\/li>\n<li>Mateus Kurpiel\u00c2\u00a0of Worcester was the informant<\/li>\n<li>The statement of death by Peter O&#8217;Shea.
