{"id":286,"date":"2006-06-16T10:00:29","date_gmt":"2006-06-16T17:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/06\/16\/uncle-jans-birth-in-nienadowa\/"},"modified":"2016-05-22T12:09:19","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T19:09:19","slug":"uncle-jans-birth-in-nienadowa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/286","title":{"rendered":"Uncle Jan&#8217;s Birth in Nienadowa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My uncle, Jan Da\u0144ko, was born in Nienadowa, Galicia (Austria-Poland) and immigrated to the United States with his mother and older sister, Zofia .\u00a0 After he arrived in America, Jan adopted the English version of his name, John, but was more commonly known as Jack.<\/p>\n<p>His date of birth varies among the sources I have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>May 2, 1905 (Birth and Baptismal Record &#8211; Church Record)<\/li>\n<li>About\u00c2\u00a01907-1908 (1910 Federal Census -\u00c2\u00a02 years old on April 15, 1910)<\/li>\n<li>About 1903-1904 (1920 Federal Census -\u00c2\u00a016 years old on January 1, 1920)<\/li>\n<li>About\u00c2\u00a01904-1905 (1920 Federal Census -\u00c2\u00a025 years old on April 1, 1920)<\/li>\n<li>May 1, 1904\u00c2\u00a0(Family History written one of my aunts)<\/li>\n<li>May 1, 1904 (Date provided by John&#8217;s descendants)<\/li>\n<li>May 1, 1904 (Affidavit for License to Marry)<\/li>\n<li>May 1, 1904 (Marriage License)<\/li>\n<li>1904 (Gravestone &#8211; born in 1904)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Baptismal Record for Jan Danko\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/Birth-Jan-Danko.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image287\" style=\"width: 447px; height: 399px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/Birth-Jan-Danko.jpg\" alt=\"Baptismal Record for Jan Danko\" width=\"447\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Birth &amp; Baptismal Record for Jan Da\u0144ko<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of the records recorded above, the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/CRB-Danko-Jan-1905.pdf\">Birth and Baptismal Record for Jan Da\u0144ko &#8211; 1905<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is the only primary record for the date of his birth, since it is the only record made at the time of the event by persons who had direct knowledge of the event .\u00a0 Other records may have been made by people who were present at the birth, but they were recorded much later .\u00a0 The Birth and Baptismal Record was recorded in Latin and states that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jan\u00c2\u00a0was the\u00c2\u00a021st birth recorded in Nienadowa that year,<\/li>\n<li>Jan\u00c2\u00a0was born on May 2, 1905 and baptized on May 3, 1905 in Dubiecko,<\/li>\n<li>Jan&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0family lived in house number 207,<\/li>\n<li>The child&#8217;s name was Jan, he was a Catholic\u00c2\u00a0boy and was legitimately born,<\/li>\n<li>Jan&#8217;s father was Micha\u0142 Da\u0144ko, son of Jakub Da\u0144ko and Agnieszka Sowa,<\/li>\n<li>Jan&#8217;s mother was Maria Dziurzy\u0144ska, daughter of Jan Dziurzy\u0144ski and Magdalena Jara,<\/li>\n<li>Jan&#8217;s Godparents were Marcin Sowa and Katarzyna Kijanka, the wife of Franciszek Kijanka,<\/li>\n<li>Jan\u00c2\u00a0was baptized by Father M. Czajkowski.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This record lists Jan&#8217;s mother as Maria Dziurzy\u0144ska, whose parents were Jan Dziurzy\u0144ski and Magdalena Jara .\u00a0 This is the first record I found that shows that the family was using the name Dziurzy\u0144ski (male)\/ Dziurzy\u0144ska (female) .\u00a0 The fact that the record shows Jan&#8217;s mother&#8217;s name was Maria is probably due to the fact that the names Maria, Marja, Marianna, and Marjanna were often used interchangeably in Poland.<\/p>\n<p>The name Dziurzy\u0144ski was\u00c2\u00a0repeatedly misspelled\u00c2\u00a0after the family arrived in America .\u00a0 The Birth Records for Michael and Mary Danko&#8217;s children who were born in America recorded the nmae Dziurzy\u0144ski as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dziurzynska (Statia Danko&#8217;s Birth Record)<\/li>\n<li>Ginsky (Bronis\u0142awa Danko&#8217;s Birth Record)<\/li>\n<li>Dzevirzynska (Michael Danko&#8217;s Birth Record)<\/li>\n<li>Jusuka (Bertha Danko&#8217;s Birth Record)<\/li>\n<li>Jurinsko (Mary Danko&#8217;s Birth Record)<\/li>\n<li>Guginski (Joseph Danko&#8217;s Birth Record)<\/li>\n<li>Dziurzynski (Helen Danko&#8217;s Birth Record)<\/li>\n<li>Dziurzynski (Frank Danko&#8217;s Birth Record)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I should note, however, that several of these Birth Records were transcriptions, and the errors in spelling may\u00c2\u00a0have occurred during transcription.<\/p>\n<p>As was the case with my aunt Zofia&#8217;s Birth and Baptismal Record, several other names on the same\u00c2\u00a0page\u00c2\u00a0as Jan&#8217;s Birth and Baptism are prominent in my family history .\u00a0 These names include Sowa, Giergont, G\u0142owacz, Bal, Pilch, Wajda, Kijanka, and Szyma\u0144ski.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
