{"id":27,"date":"2006-04-28T21:57:04","date_gmt":"2006-04-29T04:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/04\/28\/a-marriage-in-new-brunswick\/"},"modified":"2006-04-28T21:57:04","modified_gmt":"2006-04-29T04:57:04","slug":"a-marriage-in-new-brunswick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/27","title":{"rendered":"A Marriage in New Brunswick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a title=\"Provincial Archives of New Brunswick\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.gnb.ca\/Archives\/Default.aspx?L=EN\" target=\"_self\">Provincial Archives of New Brunswick<\/a>, Canada have posted an index to a large number of vital records, and some of those records are linked to images of the original documents .\u00a0 I searched for the marriage record of William McGinn and Lea Poirier who were the in-laws of my aunt, Bertha (Danko) McGinn .\u00a0 As yet, the Provincial Archives have not linked the image to the <a title=\"index entry for this marriage\" href=\"http:\/\/archives.gnb.ca\/APPS\/GovRecs\/VISSE\/141B7.aspx?L=EN&amp;Key=25413\" target=\"_self\">index entry for this marriage<\/a>, so I searched for this record while I was\u00c2\u00a0at the <a title=\"Family History Library\" href=\"http:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/Eng\/Library\/FHL\/frameset_library.asp\" target=\"_self\">Family History Library<\/a> (FHL)\u00c2\u00a0in Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n<p>I found the image on FHL US\/CAN Film 2024682 (you can click on the image below to enlarge it or you can view, download, and print\u00c2\u00a0a PDF Copy of the Marriage Record of <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/VRM-McGinn-Poirier-1895.pdf\">William McGinn and Lea Poirier<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5600\" style=\"width: 349px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/VRM-McGinn-Poirier-1895.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5600\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5600  \" title=\"The Marriage Record of William McGinn and Lea Poirier\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/VRM-McGinn-Poirier-1895-629x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The Marriage Record of William McGinn and Lea Poirier\" width=\"339\" height=\"553\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Marriage Record of William McGinn and Lea Poirier<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition, I looked through a series of films of the New Brunswick vital statistics from newspapers and found a entry for the marriage in FHL US\/CAN Book 971.5 V2nb V. 99, which appears to be a transcription form <em>The Daily Telegraph<\/em>, Saint John, New Brunswick on 16 MAY 1895:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>W.H. McGINN and bride passed through the city yesterday en route to Fredericton .\u00a0 Mr. McGinn was married yesterday morn. to Miss L.A. POIRIER .\u00a0 The ceremony was performed by Rev. Fathe Ouellett .\u00a0 Mr. McGinn is superintendent of the electrical works at the Celestial City.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I also looked up the biographical entry for Pascal Poirier, who is related to Lea Poirier, although I&#8217;m not sure how (I&#8217;ll have to check with my McGinn cousins to find out about this) .\u00a0 I found the entry in <a title=\"Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography\" href=\"http:\/\/www.museumofhoaxes.com\/cyclopedia.html\" target=\"_self\">Appleton&#8217;s Cyclopaedia of American Biography<\/a> FHL US\/CAN Book 973 D36ap 1887-89 v. 5 .\u00a0 You may recall from a previous post that Appleton&#8217;s contains at least 200 entries of fictitious individuals .\u00a0 Pascal Poirier&#8217;s biography appears to be accurate, however:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>POIRIER, Pascal,<\/strong> Canadian senator, b. in Shediac, New Brunswick, 14 Feb., 1852 .\u00a0 He is of Acadian descent .\u00a0 He completed his course of studies at St. Joseph&#8217;s college, Memramcook, studied law, and was admitted to the bar of Quebec in 1876 .\u00a0 In 1872 Mr. Poirier was appointed postmaster of the Dominion parliament, which post he held till his appointment to the senate, 9 March, 1885 .\u00a0 At an early age he contributed to the press, both French and English, and he has published &#8220;L&#8217;Origine des Acadiens&#8221; (Montreal, 1874).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
