Mentions of the village include: <em>Czarnostovo<\/em> in about 1240 (forgery); <em>Czarnostowo<\/em> in 1328, <em>Czarnosthowo<\/em> in 1425, <em>Czarnosthow<\/em> in 1477, <em>Czarnostowo<\/em> in 1582, <em>Czarnostow<\/em> in 1783, <em>Czarnostowo<\/em> in 1827, <em>Czarnostowo<\/em> in 1880, <em>Czarnost\u00f3w, Czarnost\u00f3w-Polesie<\/em> in 1952, and <em>Czarnost\u00f3w, Czarnost\u00f3w-Polesie, -towa -sia, czarnostowski<\/em>, poleski in 1971.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name Czarnost\u00f3w is from the name of a settlement *<em>Czarnost<\/em>, with the suffix <em>-owo<\/em>, later <em>-\u00f3w<\/em>. For the name of the settlement, compare names of the type <em>Ciechost<\/em>, Jarost.
