{"id":206,"date":"2006-06-02T17:26:20","date_gmt":"2006-06-03T00:26:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/06\/02\/antoni-proves-his-claim\/"},"modified":"2015-06-21T23:33:28","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T06:33:28","slug":"antoni-proves-his-claim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/206","title":{"rendered":"Antoni Proves His Claim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On January 15, 1884, Antoni Tarnowski received his Land Patent under the Homestead Act .\u00a0 Seven years earlier, he had\u00c2\u00a0prepared an Application for homesteading a specific piece of land .\u00a0 He also completed an Affidavit that he was over 21 years old and had submitted his Declaration of Intention to become a Citizen of the United States .\u00a0 In return for an application\u00c2\u00a0fee of $14, he received a Receipt.<\/p>\n<p>After applying for land under the Homestead Act, Antoni had to live on the land, improve it, build a home on it, and farm the land for five years .\u00a0 In April of 1883, Antoni filed his Second Papers &#8211; his <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/Homestead-April-1883.pdf\">Petition for Naturalization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6701\" style=\"width: 371px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/Homestead-Second-Papers-830417X.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6701\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6701   \" title=\"Petition for Naturalization of Antoni Tarnowski\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/Homestead-Second-Papers-830417X.jpg\" alt=\"Petition for Naturalization of Antoni Tarnowski\" width=\"361\" height=\"587\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Petition for Naturalization of Antoni Tarnowski<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Second Papers, filed on April 4, 1883,\u00a0show that two witnesses named\u00c2\u00a0S. J. Thompson and M. Sepak vouched that Antoni Tarnowski was a man of good character, had lived in the United States for at least five years, and had lived in the State of Minnesota for at least one year .\u00a0 The Second Papers further show that Antoni, himself, stated that he had lived in the United States for at least five years and in the State of Minnesota for at least one year, and that he\u00c2\u00a0renounced allegiance to any foreign power, especially the Emperor of Germany .\u00a0 Finally the Second Papers show that Antoni had filed a Declaration of Intention on November 4, 1876.<\/p>\n<p>That task completed, Antoni filed his <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/Homestead-June-1883.pdf\">Proof of Claim<\/a>, including his own testimony and that of two witnesses on June 30, 1883.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6704\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/Homestead-Proof-Cover-830630X.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6704\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6704  \" title=\"Cover of Homestead Proof of Antoni Tarnowski\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/Homestead-Proof-Cover-830630X.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of Homestead Proof of Antoni Tarnowski\" width=\"350\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cover of Homestead Proof of Antoni Tarnowski<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Homestead Proof shows that on June 30, 1883, Antoni Tarnowski swore that he lived on his Homestead Claim of the South Half of the Southeast Quarter and Lots 3 &amp;
