Adjacent to the\u00c2\u00a0fare p\u014dte’e in Maeva are several Marae. Like the marae on Raiatea, these marae were sacred and social spaces. Each marae includes a row of standing stones and a paved courtyard. The marae served as places for the people and the gods. Sucessively to the left of the fare\u00c2\u00a0p\u014dte’e (seen to the far right in the first photo, below), are\u00c2\u00a0Marae Vai-‘\u014dtaha,\u00a0Marae Fare Tai, and\u00c2\u00a0Marae Fare Ro’i. Land crabs\u00c2\u00a0(Cardisoma carnifex<\/em>) make their homes in burrows in the soil of the marae.<\/p>\n
