{"id":162,"date":"2006-05-23T23:49:36","date_gmt":"2006-05-24T06:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/23\/great-aunt-marys-birthdate-in-the-us-census\/"},"modified":"2016-05-07T20:43:32","modified_gmt":"2016-05-08T03:43:32","slug":"great-aunt-marys-birthdate-in-the-us-census","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/162","title":{"rendered":"Great Aunt Mary&#8217;s Birthdate in the US Census"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My grandfather, Michael Danko, was the first of my ancestors to immigrate to the United States .\u00a0 After arriving in America, he lived in Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts the rest of his life .\u00a0 He\u00c2\u00a0and his family are\u00c2\u00a0enumerated in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 US Federal Census records and his sister, my Great Aunt Mary, is enumerated in the 1920 and 1930 Census records.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/CUS-Danko-Michael-1910.pdf\">1910 US Federal Census for Michael Danko<\/a> shows my grandfather living at 3 Moran Court in Worcester .\u00a0 Of special interest is that not only are he, his wife Mary, and his children John and\u00c2\u00a0Sophie (Zofia) listed, but no fewer than seven boarders are living with them!<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"1910 Census Record for Michael Danko\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/1910-Census---Michael-Danko.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image164\" style=\"width: 462px; height: 373px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/1910-Census---Michael-Danko.jpg\" alt=\"1910 Census Record for Michael Danko\" width=\"462\" height=\"373\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">1910 Census Record for the Michael Danko Family<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/CUS-Danko-Michael-1920.pdf\">1920 US Federal Census for Michael Danko<\/a> shows that my grandfather is living at 19 Prescott Place .\u00a0 This time, the family has grown, and no\u00c2\u00a0boarders are living with them .\u00a0 Living near them and enumerated on the same page of the Census, at 11 Prescott Place Court,\u00a0is Paul Golinski and his family .\u00a0 Paul&#8217;s wife Mary is my grandfather&#8217;s sister, Mary.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"1920 Census Record for Michael Danko and Paul Golinski\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/1920-Census---Michael-Danko.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image166\" style=\"width: 465px; height: 357px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/1920-Census---Michael-Danko.jpg\" alt=\"1920 Census Record for Michael Danko and Paul Golinski\" width=\"465\" height=\"357\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">1920 Census Record for the Michael Danko Family and the Paul Golinski Family<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/CUS-Danko-Michael-1930.pdf\">1930 US Federal Census for Michael Danko<\/a> shows that, except for my Aunt Sophie, my grandfather\u00c2\u00a0and his family\u00c2\u00a0are living at 19 Prescott Street, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/CUS-Golinski-Paul-1930.pdf\">1930 US Federal Census for Paul Golinski<\/a>, shows that Golinskis are living nearby at 11 Prescott Place Court.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"1930 Census Record for Michael Danko\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/1930-Census-Danko.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image169\" style=\"width: 468px; height: 327px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/1930-Census---Paul-Golinski.jpg\" alt=\"1930 Census Record for Paul Golinski\" width=\"473\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">1930 Census Record for the Paul Golinski Family<\/p>\n<p>Towards my goal of learning my Great Aunt Mary&#8217;s date of birth, I started\u00c2\u00a0to examine the paperwork that documents her birth date .\u00a0 <a title=\"Yesterday\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/22\/when-was-great-aunt-mary-born\/\">Yesterday<\/a>, I presented four documents:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mary&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0Birth and Baptismal Record, a Church Record from Poland, showing that her birth date was January 12, 1884<\/li>\n<li>Information from Mary&#8217;s daughter Fran, who told me Mary was born on March 12, 1887<\/li>\n<li>A Cemetery Burial Record, showing that Mary was born in about 1886-1887<\/li>\n<li>Mary&#8217;s Gravestone Epitaph, showing that Mary was born in 1887<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With two conflicting birth dates, I need to search other records to determine which date is correct .\u00a0 It&#8217;s possible that the Birth and Baptismal record is not for Mary, but for a sister named Marianna .\u00a0 My family knows that my grandfather had a sister named Mary and is unaware of another sister Marianna, so it&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0likely that Mary and Marianna are the same person.<\/p>\n<p>The census records provide more information about Mary&#8217;s birth date .\u00a0 In the 1920 Census, Mary (Danko) Golinski is 32 years old, indicating that she was born in about 1887-1888 .\u00a0 In the 1930 Census, Mary is 42 years old, again indicating that she was born in about 1887-1888 .\u00a0 This appears to be evidence that the Birth and Baptismal Record I have is not for my Great Aunt Mary.<\/p>\n<p>The 1920 and 1930 Census Records also show that Mary immigrated to the United States, but the two records show different years of immigration!\u00c2\u00a0 The 1920 Census shows that she immigrated in 1909, and the 1930 Census shows that she immigrated in 1910 .\u00a0 So, here is another possibility .\u00a0 Mary&#8217;s emigration and immigration records should show her age.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00c2\u00a0Mary immigrated before April 15, 1910, she should be enumerated in the 1910 Census .\u00a0 I have not yet found Mary in the 1910 Census, but since she was single in 1910, I may have to wait until the every-name index for 1910 is available.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Census Records show that Mary had filed her First Papers for Naturalization .\u00a0 This is yet another source that will show her birth date.<\/p>\n<p>So, there are more records to find to solve this mystery .\u00a0 Tomorrow, Great Aunt Mary&#8217;s emigration and immigration records.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
