Way back on 13 June 2006, I wrote about the Dziurzy\u0144ski brickwall<\/a> .\u00a0 My paternal grandmother, Marianna Dziurzy\u0144ska, was apparently born in Sielnica in the parish of Dyl\u0105gowa .\u00a0 I had\u00c2\u00a0previously found two other people who had Dziurzy\u0144ski ancestors from Sielnica, but we were unable to prove that any of our three family lines were actually connected.<\/p>\n

Well, it seems that on 04 Oct 1945, Dyl\u0105gowa and the neighboring villages of Bartk\u00f3wka, \u0141\u0105czki, Sielnica, and Paw\u0142okoma were burned to the ground by the Ukrainian Rebel Army .\u00a0 The parish metrical books were transferred to the Diocesan Archives in Przemy\u015bl and, because the books are in poor condition,\u00a0the archivists there are reluctant to allow genealogy researchers to examine the records.<\/p>\n

Several years passed and we were still unable to find any evidence that our three Dziurzy\u0144ski families were related to each other .\u00a0 Finally, in the year 2011, Paulette Mackuliak and I started a Dziurzynski surname project at Family Tree DNA .\u00a0 We enlisted volunteers from each of the three lines to take the Family Finder Test through Family Tree DNA.<\/p>\n

The Family Finder Test examines autosomal DNA (atDNA), the DNA from the 22 pairs of human chromosomes that are not either sex chromosomes (X and Y) and are not mitochondrial chromosomes (mtDNA) .\u00a0 This test examines a large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on those chromosomes and establishes relationships between pairs of people whose DNA match.<\/p>\n

Paulette and I waited for the results .\u00a0 To our disappointment, the only matches were within a particular family line .\u00a0 There were no matches between people from different lines and there was no evidence that people from different lines were related to each other.<\/p>\n

Then, on Saturday, 09 Jun 2012, the results from a new participant came in (Participant 4 in the chart below) .\u00a0 To our amazement, the DNA\u00c2\u00a0from this new participant matched people from all three lines .\u00a0 In fact, Participant 4 matched all the other participants in the chart below .\u00a0 We had our answer!\u00c2\u00a0 All three lines of Dziurzy\u0144skis descend from a common ancestor!<\/p>\n

Our problem now is that we still can’t figure out who that common ancestor was .\u00a0 The paper trail simply isn’t complete\u00c2\u00a0enough to give us that answer .\u00a0 We have, however, constructed a theoretical family tree that is consistent with the DNA information and with known dates of birth, marriage, and death.<\/p>\n
