{"id":15701,"date":"2012-02-19T23:30:13","date_gmt":"2012-02-20T07:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/?p=15701"},"modified":"2012-11-16T15:51:21","modified_gmt":"2012-11-16T23:51:21","slug":"final-views-of-the-mayan-city-of-tulum-in-quintana-roo-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/15701","title":{"rendered":"Final Views of the Mayan City of Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mayan city of Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico is a compact site with only a handful of archeologically interesting structures .\u00a0 The city is, however, located right on the Caribbean, lending it perhaps the Mayan city with the most beautiful views.<\/p>\n<p>The Temple of the Descending God is\u00c2\u00a0mentioned on one of the descriptive plaques:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Templo del Dios Descendente (Temple of the Descending God)<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the most beautiful temples in Tulum .\u00a0 Neither the walls nor the door adjust to a straight vertical line .\u00a0 This is not a result of the passage of time, but rather the way it was originally designed .\u00a0 It was constructed upon another temple which was fitted in, in order to serve as a base .\u00a0 In the recess above the door there is a sculpture representing a personage descending from the heavens, with a headdress crowing his head and holding an object in his hands .\u00a0 The temple was decorated inside and out with a mural painting of several representations of gods, which, unfortunately, can no longer be admired.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other structures include the Temple of the Wind and the House of the Cenote (a structure built over a sinkhole presumably used for the city&#8217;s water supply .\u00a0 Finally, a view of the rear of the Castle, looking towards the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Temple-of-the-Descending-God.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-15702\" title=\"The Temple of the Descending God\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Temple-of-the-Descending-God.jpg\" alt=\"The Temple of the Descending God\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Temple-of-the-Descending-God.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Temple-of-the-Descending-God-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Temple-of-the-Descending-God-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Temple of the Descending God<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE:\u00a0 The Temple of the Descending God (Tulum, Quintana Roo, M\u00e9xico); photographed by Stephen J.
