{"id":15672,"date":"2012-02-15T23:30:47","date_gmt":"2012-02-16T07:30:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/?p=15672"},"modified":"2012-11-16T15:48:25","modified_gmt":"2012-11-16T23:48:25","slug":"a-first-look-at-the-mayan-city-of-tulum-in-quintana-roo-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/15672","title":{"rendered":"A First Look at the Mayan City of Tulum in Quintana Roo, Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second Mayan archeological site I visited in Quintana Roo, Mexico was the coastal city of Tulum .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The city was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries .\u00a0 Tulum was unusual in that it was a walled city with the walls serving both for defense and to separate the sacred part of the city from the ordinary citizens .\u00a0 The descriptive plaque describing the walls states:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Muralla<\/p>\n<p>Tulum is surrounded by a huge stone wall .\u00a0 Its height is irregular since it follows the contours of the land and it is rectangular shaped with only three sides; that which faces the sea was naturally protected .\u00a0 Without a doubt, the wall had a defensive purpose although it also served to establish the limits of the &#8220;sacred&#8221; area .\u00a0 It has five doorways or entrances:\u00a0 one facing west, two to the north and two more to the south .\u00a0 From the inside, one can climb the wall by using the stairs specially built for this purpose.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One enters Tulum through one of several gates through the wall .\u00a0 Inside the gates, the structures are numbered for archeological purposes .\u00a0 Structures 20 and 34 are similar, except for the degree of disrepair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Tulum-Welcome-Sign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-15673\" title=\"Entrance Sign to Tulum\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Tulum-Welcome-Sign.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance Sign to Tulum\" width=\"420\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Tulum-Welcome-Sign.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Tulum-Welcome-Sign-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Tulum-Welcome-Sign-682x1024.jpg 682w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Entrance Sign to Tulum<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE:\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Entrance Sign to Tulum (Tulum, Quintana Roo, M\u00e9xico); photographed by Stephen J.
