{"id":15629,"date":"2012-02-09T23:48:22","date_gmt":"2012-02-10T07:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/?p=15629"},"modified":"2012-02-09T23:48:22","modified_gmt":"2012-02-10T07:48:22","slug":"the-acropolis-in-kohunlich-quintana-roo-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/15629","title":{"rendered":"The Acropolis in Kohunlich, Quintana Roo, Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The largest structure in the ancient Mayan city of Kohunlich is called the Acropolis .\u00a0 As in other buildings with residential funcions, stone beds can be seen with small cubbyholes beneath where the resident could store possessions .\u00a0 The descriptive plaque near the Acropolis states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This, the largest construction in Kohunlich, was originally a &#8220;C&#8221; shaped building .\u00a0 Its most notable features are its eight meter high vaulted interiors and its false steps fa\u00ed\u00a7ade, which can be seen on the North and Eastern sides, built in the R\u00ed\u00ado Bec style from Southern Campeche .\u00a0 This building was later covered in its entirely by a huge platform upon which what seems to be a residential complex with restricted access was built .\u00a0 Finally, during a later period, another residential building was added towards the South- West .\u00a0 In its interior, some &#8220;Graffiti&#8221; can still be seen on its stuccoed walls.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Acropolis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-15630\" title=\"The Acropolis\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Acropolis.jpg\" alt=\"The Acropolis\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Acropolis.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Acropolis-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Acropolis-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Acropolis<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE:\u00a0 The Acropolis (Kohunlich, Quintana Roo, M\u00e9xico); photographed by Stephen J.
