In the piazza stands an obelisk without hieroglyphics that was rescued from the Mausoleum of Augustus where it had broken into three pieces. The obelisk was placed in the midst of a group of four statues showing Castor and Pollux taming their horses.<\/p>\n<p>At the perimeter of the piazza is the Palazzo del Quirinal, the residence of the president of Italy. In 1583, Pope Gregory XIII\u00c2 had the Palazzo del Quirinal built for use as a papal summer residence.
