The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Basilica of St. Mary of the Flower), commonly referred to as the Duomo, is the Roman Catholic Cathedral in Florence, Italy. Construction of the Gothic structure was begun in 1296 but the Gothic Revival fa\u00e7ade was not completed until the 19t century. The Duomo boasts the world’s largest brick dome and three bronze doors depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. Just below the rose window in the center of the fa\u00e7ade are sculptures of the twelve apostles with a sculpture of the Madonna with Child in the center. The Baptistery and the Campanile stand nearby.<\/p>\n
