{"id":14,"date":"2006-04-26T21:00:11","date_gmt":"2006-04-27T04:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/04\/26\/world-war-ii-draft-cards\/"},"modified":"2019-01-27T16:10:47","modified_gmt":"2019-01-28T00:10:47","slug":"world-war-ii-draft-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/14","title":{"rendered":"World War II Draft Cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a title=\"Family History Library\" href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/locations\/saltlakecity-library\" target=\"_self\">Family History Library<\/a> (FHL) holds 166 microfilm reels of World War II Selective Service System Registration Cards for the state of Massachusetts .\u00a0 These are the Draft Registration Cards for the Fourth Registration conducted in 1942 and include men born between 28 APR 1877 and 16 FEB 1897 .\u00a0 The original cards are located in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/boston\">National Archives at Boston<\/a> .\u00a0 Note:\u00a0The FHL holds\u00c2\u00a0copies\u00c2\u00a0of World War II Selective Service System Registration Cards for other states, too.<\/p>\n<p>I was particularly interested in these records since I have been unable to find my grandfather&#8217;s birth and baptismal record in Poland .\u00a0 In\u00c2\u00a0various official documents, my grandfather\u00c2\u00a0stated that he was from the village of Pomoski in the\u00c2\u00a0\u0141om\u017ca Gubernia of Russia-Poland, but I couldn&#8217;t find his birth and baptismal record in the church records for the village of Pomoski (there was no church in Pomoski itself;\u00c2\u00a0the residents of Pomoski belonged to the <a href=\"http:\/\/diecezjaplocka.pl\/parafie\/szwelice-sw-jana-chrzciciela\">Parish and Church in Szwelice<\/a>) .\u00a0 Since these World War II Draft Registration Cards included the place of birth, I thought this might help me find my grandfather&#8217;s birth and baptismal records.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"WWI Draft Card KN Obverse\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/WWII-Draft-KN-ob.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image20\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 454px; height: 297px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/WWII-Draft-KN-ob.jpg\" alt=\"WWI Draft Card KN Obverse\" width=\"454\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"WWII Draft Card KN Reverse\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/WWII-Draft-KN-rb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image21\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"width: 298px; height: 395px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/04\/WWII-Draft-KN-rb.jpg\" alt=\"WWII Draft Card KN Reverse\" width=\"298\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a>I have attached images of the obverse and reverse of my grandfather&#8217;s Draft Registration Card found on FHL US\/CAN Film 2251612\u00c2\u00a0(click on the thumbnails, above,\u00a0to see larger images) .\u00a0 My grandfather listed his name as Konstanty Niedzialkoski, but signed his name as Kostanty Niedzialkowski\u00c2\u00a0(he used the spelling Kostanty Niedzialkowski for most of his life) .\u00a0 The address, 18 Huntington Ave. in Worcester, Massachusetts, was owned by his uncle, Franciszek Niedzialkoski .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Surprisingly, Kostanty listed his place of birth as Warsaw, Poland, not the village of Pomoski!\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps\u00c2\u00a0Kostanty was born in Warsaw, but lived in Pomoski.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to my difficulty in finding Kostanty&#8217;s birth and baptismal record, I haven&#8217;t been able to find the marriage record of Kostanty&#8217;s parents (Teofil and Ksawera) in Pomoski .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0My working hypothesis is\u00c2\u00a0that Teofil and Ksawera were married in another location and Ksawera gave birth to\u00c2\u00a0Kostanty in the same place she was married .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0A family connection\u00c2\u00a0does exist in\u00c2\u00a0Warsaw, since Teofil&#8217;s mother was born in\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Parafia Sw. Krzyza\" href=\"http:\/\/www.swkrzyz.pl\/\" target=\"_self\">Parafia \u015awi\u0119tego Krzy\u017ca<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(Holy Cross Parish) in Warsaw .\u00a0 So, I have another lead to follow now, although this\u00c2\u00a0may be a tough one &#8211; the records for\u00c2\u00a0Parafia \u015aw. Krzy\u017ca\u00c2\u00a0held by the FHL include documents that date\u00c2\u00a0only from 1826 &#8211; 1876, too early to include records for my grandfather or my great-grandparents.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the information on my grandfather&#8217;s World War II Draft Registration Card gives me some additional information and another lead to follow.<\/p>\n<p>As a historical note, the following notice appeared on page 10 of the New York Times on 24 APR 1942, calling older men to register for the fourth registration of the World War II Draft:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>All Men 45-64 Required To Register at Week-End<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 All men in New York City, whether citizens or aliens, who reached their forty-fifth birthday on or before Feb. 16, 1942, or who will not have reached their sixty-fifth birthday by April 27, 1942, must register for selective service either tomorrow or Sunday between 1 P. M. and 6 P. M. or on Monday between 7 A. M. and 9 P. M.<\/p>\n<p>They must register in their own local board area .\u00a0 Selective service headquarters advised them yesterday to learn immediately the address of their local board .\u00a0 It was suggested that they ask neighbors who already had registered where to find the local board; then go to the board to learn whether to register there or elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Daily commuters will not be registered in New York City.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
