{"id":139,"date":"2006-05-19T23:48:28","date_gmt":"2006-05-20T06:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/19\/death-records-in-galicia\/"},"modified":"2016-05-22T10:11:22","modified_gmt":"2016-05-22T17:11:22","slug":"death-records-in-galicia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/139","title":{"rendered":"Death Records in Galicia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While in Poland, my companions and I stayed in\u00c2\u00a0\u0141a\u0144cut, a Polish village with a rich history not far from the villages of my ancestors .\u00a0 We had reservations at the hotel connected to the \u0141a\u0144cut castle .\u00a0 When we arrived at the gate to the castle, a guard told us that there had been a fire and that our reservations had been transferred to another hotel\u00c2\u00a0nearby .\u00a0 We eventually were able to tour the castle and were awed by the beauty and splendor of the castle and the grounds .\u00a0 In contrast to my preconceived notion that a castle was a drafty, stone structure with turrets, minarets, and drawbridges, the \u0141a\u0144cut castle was more like an enormous, opulently beautiful\u00c2\u00a0mansion equipped with every comfort.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Lancut Castle\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Lancut.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image136\" style=\"width: 443px; height: 312px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Lancut.jpg\" alt=\"Lancut Castle\" width=\"443\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">The Castle in\u00c2\u00a0\u0141a\u0144cut<\/p>\n<p>My ancestors lived in a village south of \u0141a\u0144cut, but I doubt if they ever visited \u0141a\u0144cut .\u00a0 After my trip, I hired a professional genealogist to visit the church in Dubiecko, Poland to find the church records of my ancestors .\u00a0 By far, most of the records he delivered were birth and baptismal records .\u00a0 He also found some marriage records, but of the fifty-one records he delivered to me, only three were death records:\u00a0one for my great great grandfather, Pawe\u0142 Da\u0144ko, one for my great great great grandfather, Adalbert Da\u0144ko, and one for J\u00f3zef Da\u0144ko, who may\u00c2\u00a0have been\u00c2\u00a0my great great great great grandfather.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Jozef Danko Death Record\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Death-Danko-Jozef.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image137\" style=\"width: 451px; height: 320px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Death-Danko-Jozef.jpg\" alt=\"Jozef Danko Death Record\" width=\"451\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reason I am equivocating here is that the death record for J\u00f3zef contains very little information .\u00a0 However, J\u00f3zef&#8217;s death record does show that he was living in house number 161 when he died, and other records report\u00c2\u00a0that my third great grandfather, Adalbert Da\u0144ko,\u00a0lived in house number 161 after J\u00f3zef died .\u00a0 Other known relatives lived in house numbers 158 and 160 .\u00a0 This is weak evidence that J\u00f3zef was my fourth great grandfather, but he was probably related to my ancestors in some way.<\/p>\n<p>The death record contains the following information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dies mortis &#8211; Day of death<\/li>\n<li>Mensis &#8211; Month<\/li>\n<li>Nrus Domus &#8211; House number<\/li>\n<li>Nomen mortui &#8211; Name of the deceased<\/li>\n<li>Religio (Catholica, Aut alia) &#8211; Religion (Catholic, Other)<\/li>\n<li>Sexus (Mas, Foemina) &#8211; Sex (Male, Female)<\/li>\n<li>Dies Vitae &#8211; Days of Life [Age at time of death]<\/li>\n<li>Morbus et Qualitas Mortis &#8211; Disease and Cause of Death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/CRD-Danko-Jozef-1787.pdf\">Death and Burial Record of J\u00f3zef Danko &#8211; 1787<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is similar to other Church Records in Galicia:\u00a0 it was written in Latin and the information was written in a columnar format in books with preprinted pages .\u00a0 J\u00f3zef&#8217;s death record reports that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>J\u00f3zef Da\u0144ko died on October 26, 1787<\/li>\n<li>He lived in house number 161<\/li>\n<li>He was a male Catholic<\/li>\n<li>He was 70 years old when he died<\/li>\n<li>His cause of death was Morbograpante, but I don&#8217;t know how to translate this word or phrase<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The other death records I have are more recent records that include the name of the spouse of the deceased, the date of burial, the name of the officiating priest, and the occupation of the deceased .\u00a0 Since the earliest death records contain so little information, I may never be able to positively connect J\u00f3zef with my family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Genealogical Trivia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Approximate Numbers of Deaths due to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Black Death (Bubonic Plague) 1330&#8217;s &#8211;
