The record, translated from the French, states:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">S.11.B.24. [burial #11] [baptism #38]<br \/>\nUnnamed Child<br \/>\nPatenaude<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">On the tenth of March, one thousand eight hundred eighty-one, we, the undersigned parish vicar, have buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery, the body of an infant baptized provisionally at home and who died five hours after birth, born the previous evening of the legitimate marriage of Charles Patenaude and Osithe Gamache of this parish. Witnesses at the burial were Charles Patenaude and Jean Marcoux who are not able to write.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">[signed] Chas. Ed. Milette, Priest and Vicar<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">This unnamed child is apparently a male child. In this record, the\u00c2\u00a0word <em>n\u00e9<\/em>, rather than\u00c2\u00a0<em>n\u00e9e<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0is used\u00c2\u00a0to express\u00c2\u00a0the English\u00c2\u00a0word <em>born<\/em> .\u00a0Since the masculine form of the verb is used, the child must have been a male child.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The child had been baptized provisionally at home, since the parents apparently did not have time to bring the child to the church to be baptized before the child died.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">In\u00c2\u00a0centuries past, the Roman Catholic Church\u00c2\u00a0speculated that\u00c2\u00a0infants who died before being baptized\u00c2\u00a0entered a state of\u00c2\u00a0limbo instead of heaven .\u00a0Roman Catholic parents considered infant baptism of utmost importance to ensure that their children would be able to enter heaven should they die as infants.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Recently, the International Theological Commission of the Roman Catholic Church\u00c2\u00a0stated that limbo represents an &#8220;<a title=\"unduly restrictive view of salvation\" href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/faithvalues\/2003675522_limbo21.html\">unduly restricted view of salvation<\/a>&#8220;, thus reversing centuries of theological thought.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A male child, born to Charles Patenaude and Osithe Gamache in 1881, died five hours after birth.
