{"id":120,"date":"2006-05-16T22:55:50","date_gmt":"2006-05-17T05:55:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/16\/stephanie-meleskis-will\/"},"modified":"2016-05-07T19:21:02","modified_gmt":"2016-05-08T02:21:02","slug":"stephanie-meleskis-will","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/120","title":{"rendered":"Stephanie Meleski&#8217;s Will"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One day in 1973, my grandmother, Helen (Chmielewska) Niedzialkowski, asked if someone could give her a lift .\u00a0 When asked where she needed to go, she said that she needed to clean out an apartment .\u00a0 When asked why she needed to clean out an apartment, she answered that someone had died .\u00a0 When asked who died, she replied, &#8220;My sister.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, most of the family never even knew Helen had a sister.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00c2\u00a0don&#8217;t know much about my grandmother&#8217;s family,\u00a0and she didn&#8217;t talk about them very much .\u00a0 When asked about her life in the old country, she would just say, &#8220;The past is dead,&#8221; and that would be the end of the conversation .\u00a0 My Aunt Jan told me that sometimes, while Jan was fixing Helen&#8217;s hair,\u00a0Helen would reminisce about her life before she came to America, but she was usually reluctant to talk about her past.<\/p>\n<p>What I do know is that Helen&#8217;s parents were Vincent Chmielewski and Anastasia Wojnowska, she had one full sister named Ona, she had one half-brother named Joseph, and she had one half-sister named Stephanie .\u00a0 There may have been other half-siblings, but I know even less about them .\u00a0 Joseph and Stephanie immigrated to the United States, but Ona stayed behind .\u00a0 From various documents, I&#8217;ve learned that my grandmother may have been born in Vilnius, Trakai, Butrymonys, or Likiskiai in what is now Lithuania .\u00a0 Since Trakai is in Vilnius County and Likiskiai is in Butrymonys County, these two villages are my best guesses for her birthplace.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"those two villages\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Likiskiai-and-Trakai.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image123\" style=\"width: 445px; height: 326px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Likiskiai-and-Trakai.jpg\" alt=\"those two villages\" width=\"445\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Helen, Joseph, and Stephanie settled in Worcester, Massachusetts, they changed their surname to Meleski .\u00a0 Joseph married and had several children, including <a title=\"Harry Meleski\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/04\/30\/us-vital-records\">Harry Meleski<\/a>, about whom I&#8217;ve written before .\u00a0 Stephanie never married, as far as I know .\u00a0 In 1960 she wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/ERW-Meleski-Stephanie-1960.pdf\">letter to Helen<\/a> in which\u00c2\u00a0Stephanie described which of her belongings she wished to bequeath to Helen.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Stephanie Meleski's Letter to Helen\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Meleski-Will-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image119\" style=\"width: 420px; height: 581px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Meleski-Will-11.jpg\" alt=\"Stephanie Meleski's Letter to Helen\" width=\"420\" height=\"581\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The letter, translated into English, reads as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"right\">The 26th Day of May 1960<\/p>\n<p>Dear Helen:<\/p>\n<p>I leave you all these my Holy pictures and these my clothes, also my little Table, 2 Chairs, a Lamp, 2 Watches, a Radio, 2 Blankets, my dishes, and that which you will find in the Trunk.<\/p>\n<p>I ask from time to time praying to the Lord God for my soul so that the merciful Lord God didn&#8217;t give me a long time to suffer in purgatory.<\/p>\n<p>Now I go to my Lord and Maker who created me.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Your sister<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">Stephania S. Meleski<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>From the tone of Stephanie&#8217;s letter, it sounds as if she&#8217;s ready to die at any moment .\u00a0 She lived, however, another 13 years after she wrote the letter .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/VRD-Meleski-Stephanie-1973.pdf\">Stephanie Meleski&#8217;s Death Certificate<\/a> shows that she died on January 31, 1973 at the age of 87 years, 11\u00c2\u00a0months, and 28 days.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a class=\"imagelink\" title=\"Stephanie Meleski's Death Certificate\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Death-Meleski-Stephanie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"image122\" style=\"width: 425px; height: 384px;\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/Death-Meleski-Stephanie.jpg\" alt=\"Stephanie Meleski's Death Certificate\" width=\"425\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stephanie was buried in Notre Dame Cemetery in Worcester, Massachusetts on February 2, 1973 in Section 25-C, Lot 1052, Grave 1 .\u00a0 She purchased two graves and her name is listed in the cemetery records as Mrs. Stephania Meleski,\u00a0but as far as\u00c2\u00a0I know\u00c2\u00a0she was never married.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18784\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/BRM-Meleski-Stephanie-1973-Obverse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18784\" class=\" wp-image-18784\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/BRM-Meleski-Stephanie-1973-Obverse.jpg\" alt=\"Grave of Stephanie Meleski - 1973 - Reverse\" width=\"420\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/BRM-Meleski-Stephanie-1973-Obverse.jpg 800w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/BRM-Meleski-Stephanie-1973-Obverse-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/BRM-Meleski-Stephanie-1973-Obverse-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/BRM-Meleski-Stephanie-1973-Obverse-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grave of Stephanie Meleski &#8211; 1973 &#8211; Obverse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>SOURCE: Grave of Stephanie Meleski &#8211; 1973 &#8211; Obverse (Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, USA); photographed by Stephen J.
