{"id":11170,"date":"2011-01-07T23:30:14","date_gmt":"2011-01-08T07:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/index.php\/archives\/11170"},"modified":"2011-01-07T23:30:14","modified_gmt":"2011-01-08T07:30:14","slug":"city-of-the-dead-cementario-de-la-recoleta-buenos-aires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/11170","title":{"rendered":"City of the Dead &#8211; Cementario de la Recoleta, Buenos Aires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cementario de la Recoleta in Buenos Aires is as close as I&#8217;ve ever seen a cemetery meet the description of &#8220;City of the Dead&#8221; .\u00a0 The cemetery includes wide, paved streets and narrow alleyways bordered by mausoleums that often look like miniature houses .\u00a0 Here and there are green spaces punctuated by monuments and statues .\u00a0 The first image below looks down one of the wide avenues .\u00a0 Occasionally, one of the tombs includes interesting and sometimes frightening artwork, such as the skull seen on the tomb of the Family of Doctor Alexo Castex .\u00a0 Unfortunately, I was not able to learn much about Doctor Castex, which frustrates me as a genealogist!\u00c2\u00a0 Finally, the tomb of Martin Rodriguez (1771-1845) shows a sculpture of this Argentine politician and soldier who participated in the resistance to the British Invasion of the R\u00ed\u00ado de la Plata during the Napoleonic Wars and the subsequent May Revolution .\u00a0 Rodriguez later became governor of Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Avenue-of-Tombs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11187\" title=\"City of the Dead\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Avenue-of-Tombs.jpg\" alt=\"City of the Dead\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>City of the Dead<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">SOURCE:\u00a0 City of the Dead (Buenos Aires, Argentina), photographed by Stephen J.
