{"id":10990,"date":"2010-12-31T23:30:48","date_gmt":"2011-01-01T07:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/index.php\/archives\/10990"},"modified":"2010-12-31T23:30:48","modified_gmt":"2011-01-01T07:30:48","slug":"catedral-metropolitana-de-buenos-aires-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/10990","title":{"rendered":"Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 30 in plenty of time to celebrate the coming of the New Year .\u00a0 On my first day, I explored the Plaza de Mayo and the Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires) .\u00a0 Plaza de Mayo is named for the date when Argentina declared its independence from Spain, May 25, 1810 .\u00a0 The cathedral was built on the site of the original colonial church and was completed in 1827 .\u00a0 The bas relief sculptures in the triangular pediment at the top of the cathedral shows the reunion of Joseph with his brothers and his father Jacob.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Metropolitan-Cathedral2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10993\" title=\"Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Metropolitan-Cathedral2.jpg\" alt=\"Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires\" width=\"480\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE:\u00a0 Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires, Argentina), photographed by Stephen J. Danko on 30 Dec 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Of great importance to the people of Argentina is the mausoleum of General Jos\u00e9 de San Martin .\u00a0 San Martin is the national hero of Argentina and one of the liberators of Spanish South America .\u00a0 Born in Argentina in 1777 or 1778, he died in France in 1850 .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 His remains were interred in the cathedral in 1880 .\u00a0 The mausoleum is also the final resting place for General\u00c2\u00a0 Juan Gregorio de las Heras, General Tom\u00ed\u00a1s Guido, and the Unknown Soldier of the Independence .\u00a0 The three statues surrounding the mausoleum represent Argentina, Peru, and Chile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Mausoleum-of-General-San-Martin2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10995\" title=\"Mausoleum of General Jos\u00e9 de San Martin\" src=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/Mausoleum-of-General-San-Martin2.jpg\" alt=\"Mausoleum of General Jos\u00e9 de San Martin\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Mausoleum of General Jos\u00e9 de San Martin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>SOURCE:\u00a0 Mausoleum of General Jos\u00e9 de San Martin (Buenos Aires, Argentina), photographed by Stephen J.
