{"id":102,"date":"2006-05-14T22:35:25","date_gmt":"2006-05-15T05:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/14\/an-unexpected-connection-with-dubiecko\/"},"modified":"2016-05-07T16:46:26","modified_gmt":"2016-05-07T23:46:26","slug":"an-unexpected-connection-with-dubiecko","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/102","title":{"rendered":"An Unexpected Connection with Dubiecko"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just got off the phone after speaking with\u00c2\u00a0Kathy Smith\u00c2\u00a0about Dubiecko, the parish of my Danko ancestors .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Kathy is leaving tomorrow morning for a trip to Berlin, Krak\u00f3w, and Dubiecko, and she was searching the web for information about Dubiecko .\u00a0 By chance, she happened to come across my blog entry <a title=\"The Church in Dubiecko and What I Found There\" href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/04\/the-church-in-dubiecko-and-what-i-found-there\">The Church in Dubiecko and What I Found There<\/a>, and posted a comment .\u00a0 She also sent me an email message to which I responded and then she called me this evening.<\/p>\n<p>In reading my blog, Kathy had noticed some interesting connections between our ancestors, and in talking with her, we noticed even more connections .\u00a0 While we may or may not be related to each other by blood, our families did seem to cross paths.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two\u00c2\u00a0Polish villages that appear in Kathy&#8217;s family history are Dubiecko and Sliwnica .\u00a0 My\u00c2\u00a0Da\u0144ko ancestors\u00c2\u00a0were members of the Roman Catholic Parish in Dubiecko. My great uncle,\u00a0Jan Dziurzy\u0144ski, and the my great aunt&#8217;s husband, Pawel Goli\u0144ski, were both from Sliwnica.<\/li>\n<li>The maiden name of Kathy&#8217;s grandmother was Pilch .\u00a0 One of the witnesses at my great-grandfather Jakub Da\u0144ko&#8217;s second marriage was Marcin Pilch .\u00a0 My step-great grandmother is descended from Jadwiga Pilch .\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I have attached the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/CRM-Glowacz-Andrzej-and-Pilch-Jadwiga-1792.pdf\">marriage record for Andrzej G\u0142owacz and Jadwiga Pilch<\/a> .\u00a0 The midwife for at least two of my great-grandparents&#8217; children was Agnieszka (Agnes) Pilch .\u00a0I have attached the <a href=\"https:\/\/stephendanko.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/05\/CRB-Danko-Tomasz-1840.pdf\">birth and baptismal record for Tomasz Da\u0144ko<\/a>, showing that the midwife was Agnes Pilch.<\/li>\n<li>Three of Kathy&#8217;s ancestral relatives bore the surname Sowa .\u00a0 My great grandmother was Agnieszka Sowa and one of the witnesses at my great grandfather&#8217;s second marriage was Jakub Sowa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are no smoking guns here to indicate that we are related, but it&#8217;s exciting to find someone searching for\u00c2\u00a0the same surnames\u00c2\u00a0in the same Polish villages as I am!<\/p>\n<p>Kathy and I spent quite a bit of time telling each other about our families, and I told her about my experience in Dubiecko .\u00a0 I told her about the church, and about the cemetery, and I gave her some suggestions on how she might get to see the parish records in Dubiecko .\u00a0 Since Kathy doesn&#8217;t speak Polish, and few (if any) people in Dubiecko speak English, I suggested that she find a translator before she goes to Dubiecko.<\/p>\n<p>I gave\u00c2\u00a0Kathy the name of a Polish genealogist I met last year at the Annual Meeting of the Polish Genealogical Society of America, <a title=\"Adam J\u0119dryka\" href=\"mailto:ajedr@interia.pl\">Adam J\u0119dryka<\/a> .\u00a0 Adam lives in Krakow and I had spoken to him briefly about doing some genealogical research for me .\u00a0 Since Adam speaks fluent English and is familiar with the church\u00c2\u00a0records in the southern Poland, I thought he would be the perfect person for Kathy to contact .\u00a0 Kathy has already sent Adam an email and she plans to call him when she reaches Krakow .\u00a0 Who knows?\u00c2\u00a0 Adam may be able to accompany Kathy to Dubiecko, or at least find a translator for her.<\/p>\n<p>So, with that, I wish Kathy <a title=\"szcz\u0119\u015bliwej drogi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.omniglot.com\/language\/phrases\/bonvoyage.htm\">szcz\u0119\u015bliwej drogi<\/a> (bon voyage)!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Copyright \u00a9 2006 by Stephen J.
